| Vista Ultimate | External drive / vista Hi everyone, I have a major problem witch goes as follows. I installed vista on my computer two days ago and everything went fine untill I tried to plug in my external drive (Freecom Classic 3.5 series 500gb) with ALL my files from uni, music, vids. Vista recognizes something is plugged in and install the drivers for it. But when I go into my computer the driver doesn't show. Also when I try to start up my computer with the driver plugged in, the computers startup is halted and I get a black inactive screen. The computer only boots when I disconnect my drive. Now my driver is perfectly ok, it worked on xp and I tested it on another computer with xp witch was fine. I've tried every trick on the net for the past 2 days and getting a little desperate, I would nearly throw the thing outside the window uhum ... Kidding. Now this is what I tried: - Tried installing the driver with inf files inside the windows folder. - Renamed infchache and oem files - Deleted the inf cache - Tried to install the drivers in the diskmanagment section. - Reboot with driver plugged in (but It doesn't finish the boot) - Uninstall and reinstall the driver This is what I did so far, sort or less. Now any help is very mutch appreciated, cuz i'm really desperate. Theres alot of hard work on that external so I can afford to format it. Thank you for any help or solutions you can give me, (and for further notice, my system is in excellent condition, so its definitly a vista bug) Kind Regards Sandra |

| Vista 32 win 7 7600 32 bit | Re: External drive / vista Sandra Could you go into device manager (type device manager in search) and look at storage devices. Is the HD listed there? Are there any "unknown" device (with yellow triangles on them). Does the HD appear in disk management? does the drive have a drive letter (ie E:, etc) thanks Ken |
