Installing Vista over XP

Hi,
I was wondering if this was possible with the XP drivers as when i tried to install windows 7 it couldnt detect the drivers at all.
I reinstalled XP since and used online software to find the drivers (realteck and VIA/S3) as the company that made the pc (Iqon) have gone into liquidation and the drivers are no longer available from their site.

Thanks

Re: Installing Vista over XP

Hello Minotar,

If you want to install the Windows Seven, first steps would be to search for drivers. The XP drivers won't work on Seven. As you mentioned there is impossible to get them from the computer manufacturer site, so my guess is you could try to search for them on the independent sites dedicated for drivers like this one for example.

How old is your machine? Would you fill the system specs? Perhaps, someone would help you to find specific drivers for the hardware you have, but I think, there will be very hard to find the ones for Win 7.

Also you could try to install the new OS and see if the Windows generic drivers work.

Hope it helps. Cheers...

The machine is about 4 years old.
512mb of ram
unichrome pro graphics
realteak audio
xp proffesional (full clean install)
Im almost sure it has an intel proccessor,im not too surwe as i wont have the pc at hand until later tonight.

On drivers,i take it most update the software on them so that they can be used with 7 or vista?
And do the drivers have to be very specific (as in versions, etc Ver. 10.12.1.304056)
to work or can you force them?

I understand im asking simple questions but if i dont ask i wont learn

Re: Installing Vista over XP

As I mentioned before the XP drivers won't work on Windows 7. I'm not telling this 100%, because sometimes they may, but chances are limited.

There is possible to update the drivers in the Device Manager or via Windows update after installing the new OS. The most important ones are the chipset and storage driver, the graphic driver, the audio and the network driver.

Please download the PC Wizard software that will tell you what hardware you have on your machine. It is good to know what's inside.
