DVD suddenly has driver problem

Dell Inspiron 6400 running Vista Ultimate SP2.
Sometime in the last week my DVD drive doesn't work. Uninstalling it and then letting it be found gives a driver error and a message to contact Dell. It has worked properly now for almost 3 years.
I have Windows 7 RC in a second partition which has no trouble with the DVD drive.
Win7 says the driver is cdrom.sys.
Vista says cdrom.sys AND gearaspiwdm.sys (whatever that is). If I use device manager and go to the driver, then click uninstall the hardware disappears but, when found again, automatically loads those 3 drivers. How can I uninstall/remove the drivers so that I can have Vista search online for them. Renaming both .sys files makes no difference.
