crcdisk.sys - problem loading Vista

I'm having a problem logging into Vista.

It started last week Monday (2nd Nov); I switched on my laptop (Packard Bell Easynote LE (MB-88) with 2 GB RAM) and logged into my Windows profile (Vista Home Premium, 32bit). The Welcome page came up... and that's where it stayed! When I stwiched off and back on, I was prompted to go into Safe Mode, which I did. I noticed that the system files loaded up until BtHidBus.sys was reached, where it froze for a long time until I was eventually allowed to login in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe it was because I had put the laptop to sleep, unplugged my USB HD (Maxtor 500 GB) and 'awoken' it without plugging the HD back in. So I plugged it back in, rebooted and logged in as normal. The same thing happened... it got stuck at the Welcome page, I had to cold boot, choose Safe Mode and wait..... for the system files to load up.

After searching the web for possible solutions, I found out that BtHidBus.sys is a file that was a part of my IVT Blue Soleil's Bluetooth software, and that there was possibly a triplication of the file. So I thought I'd better uninstall the program... except that you can't access Windows Installer whilst in Safe mode! So I went into MSCONFIG, disabled BTtray.exe (another Blue Soleil file) and restarted the laptop.

I'm sure it was after that point (I've really lost track, now) that I was able to login to the Normal Mode of windows, but it took almost 10 minutes. The first thing I noticed was that my Norton (360) icon did not have a green tick in it, so I opened it. Five fixes were required, so I clicked on 'Fix'. Then Norton returned a run-time error (I should have written it down, in retrospect). Anyway, I closed Norton and went to uninstall the Bluetooth program, which I did successfully (I think).

So I shut down the laptop and turned it back on, expecting that the problem would be solved. The same thing happened... it got stuck at the Welcome page, I had to cold boot, choose Safe Mode and wait..... for the system files to load up. This time it got stuck at crcdisk.sys, restarted itself and went back to Normal Mode... and this loop went on until I read somewhere that I should try disabling the Legacy USB setting in the BIOS, which I did.

I have since been able to login via Safe Mode, but I'm really handicapped. I can't access the internet (just the local network) and the sound driver is disabled. I use my laptop for online meetings and music production. This post was made on another laptop.

Can anyone please help me to get my system back to how it was? By the way, I haven't got a Vista DVD, as the OS came pre-installed.

Hello ess,
Have you considered a system restore ?.
If you go back to a point before this started, you may get back to normal.
Hope in some way this helps, good luck and post your results.

Hey Stoney,

Thanks for the reply.

I did indeed try using the System Restore facility (I should have mentioned that earlier). There were four Restore points; none of them worked.

Mind you, I haven't tried that since uninstalling the Bluetooth software... hold the phone.

Hey Stoney,

So I tried doing a System Restore to the earliest available point (20/10/09). Lo and behold, after waiting about 10 minutes, I'm was in!

That Norton error that I mentioned earlier has popped up again (AP Error - 10019,6). Also, the layout doesn't look like that of Windows Vista, plus there was a 'Location not available' error message (images posted im Mah Pics).

Truthfully, I'm scared to even attempt to go any further, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

So I tried shutting it down, after failed attempts to connect to the internet so I could perform the Norton Live Update, etc... it got stuck on the "Shutting down..." screen for about five minutes, then came the blue screen of death for a few seconds (see Mah Pics) before the computer rebooted. Now it's back at the Welcome screen, and not progressing. This is driving me nuts!

Without a Vista disk to carry out a repair with may be a problem.
Follow the link to the tutorial and see if you can repair your file system.
Hopefully this will help.

Oops! Didn't see this. Will try it.

Thanks, Stoney.

Arrrgghhh!!! Now I can't even get to Safe Mode! After I did System Restore, the BtHidBus.sys file has returned. Now the loop involves the black screen (it's now gone past the Welcome page in Normal Mode), the blue screen of death, rebooting, selecting Safe Mode, system files loading up until BtHidBus.sys and rebooting after about five minutes to Normal Mode.

So I'm not even able to try the SFC command. HELP!!

The fault seems to be with csrss.exe, which is part of the Windows process.
This is what i found.

"The Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem utilises the process csrss.exe for managing the majority of the graphical instruction sets under the Microsoft Windows operating system.
As such Csrss.exe provides the critical functions of the operating system, and its termination can result in the Blue Screen of Death being displayed.

Csrss.exe controls threading and Win32 console window features.
Threading is where the application splits itself into multiple simultaneous running tasks.
Threads supported by csrss.exe are different from processes in that threads are commonly contained within the process, with various threads sharing resources within the same process.
The Win32 console is the plain text window in the Windows API system (programs can use the console without the need for image display).

In mobile devices such as notebooks and laptops, the process csrss.exe is closely dependent on power management schemes implemented by the system as defined under the Control Panel option."

Without a Vista disk to do a repair install this is going to be difficult to fix.
I would un-install any, and all, blue tooth drivers and software, in fact i would un-install any and all drivers and software you can do without.

It's a bit of a catch 22, you cant run because of damaged files, and you cant repair the damaged files because you cant run.

When you get in to safe mode, can your run the file checker from there ?.

Just read my own post, lol, just a shot in the dark, it may be worth re-installing your video drivers, as this csrss is responsible for "managing the majority of the graphical instruction sets under the Microsoft Windows operating system".

Hey, Stoney!

I ran sfc /scannnow successfully. There were two instances in the sfcdetails.txt file where cliconfg.rll was reported as corrupted and consequently repaired (can't figure out why it was done twice, but hey)... so I'm now running the sfc /verifyonly command, now...

Actually, since scannow was (seemingly) successful, do I need to run anything else? If yes, then fine; if no, then phew!! I've got to leave for work in about four hours... need to get me some shut-eye.

You've been a great help so far, by the way. Many thanks.

If you follow the link and choose option two it will check your current drivers and recommend new ones if needed.
Also it may be worth a visit to your manufactures site and check for any updated chipset drivers.

Hey, Stoney.

Like my computer, I haven't been well.

Just so you know, I had done a chkdsk /c command two days ago; everytime the computer rebooted, a message would come up saying the drive is locked (unfortunately, I didn't capture an image of that).

This morning, I turned the laptop on, tried to load in normal mode (it didn't, although it went past the Welcome screen and gave me a blank screen) and left it on all day. I came back this evening and switched it off and on again, opting for Safe Mode. The system files loaded and again stopped at BtHidBus.sys. I remembered a posting made by someone with a similar problem, who said he pressed the on/off button twice while on the waiting for the system files to load. So I did it... and waited. About two minutes after, the computer rebooted and started to load in Normal Mode, veeeerrrry slow. As I said earlier, I'm not very well, so I stretched out and fell asleep.

I woke up about an hour later and Vista was loaded, although the Sidebar was white as opposed to invisible. There was also a message in the middle of the screen:
The file "bkmaker.exe" seems to be corrupted.
I checked it out on the web; it belonged to ASCOMP's BackUp Maker program, which I had downloaded earlier in the year.
There was also another Norton internal error encountered, this time 10014, 3001. I checked it out and it related to Live Update not working properly. Anyway, I tried closing Norton and it crashed. I tried using Task Manager to force close it and the whole system froze. So I switched the computer off, holding the button down.

When I switched it back on, THAT'S when the chkdsk command kicked in!!
During the three stages there were quite a number of files reportedly corrupted and repaired and some deleted. The computer then rebooted and chkdsk started again, reporting again a number of corrupted, deleted and repaired files... then rebooted once more. On the third time, chkdsk reported there were no errors, and the computer proceeded to load in Normal Mode.

The message that came up afterwards shocked the heck out of me::shock: Windows must be reinstalled (check out Mah Pics). Strangely enough, while I looked on at this message in dismay, Windows was loading up. In fact the only thing that didn't load up was my desktop wallpaper.

Anyway, I quickly went to the Control Panel, selected Programs and Features and started uninstalling some programs. For some reason, though, I can't seem to uninstall BackUp Maker (is it safe to just delete the files from the folder?), although it loaded up at startup.

So I'm about to attempt shut-down. Geez, no wonder I'm sick!! I'll keep you posted.

PS: at some point during all of this there WAS a BSOD and a consequent Startup Repair.

Oh... and I haven't even done the update for the video drives yet.

So I've done a restart, I was asked to activate Windows (now or later... I chose 'now'). Now there's message in the bottom right-hand corner of my screen saying my Windows Vista is not genuine!! Also a message comes up in the middle of the screen saying I might want to ring Microsoft about this (see Mah Pics).
What the heck do I do, now?? Vista came pre-installed with my laptop. HELP!!
