Loss of signal to VDU

Any suggestions please? I'm running Home Premium edition on a HP Pavilion Slimline and have had the odd problem with the screen going black (can't remember the precise error message as has been infrequent problem).
Today however the VDU is indicating there is a total absence of signal although the processor seems to be going through the motions of booting normally. I have tried a spare monitor without success and also tried to ensure the connections are as tight as possible but all without any luck.
I have current anti-virus protection and am not aware of any problems in that direction. Nothing has been changed recently in terms of software/hardware.

Thanks

Hi, thanks for replying. Bizarrely I have now solved the problem but I still don't understand the cause exactly.
When buying the PC new 2 years ago I was told to use the adaptor supplied with the PC when connecting to my secondhand monitor, which I have done without any problem, other than the occasional incidence of the screen going blank. Feeling inspired (or desperate!) tonight I tried without the adaptor using different port and presto, the problem of the complete absence of signal to the VDU was solved.
