Hi,
I recently reinstalled Vista into my hp m7760n desktop. Vista Home Premium 32.
After the reinstall from the reinstallation disks, my USB decided to crap out.
To be specific, when I plug in usb keys, my iphone, my printer, or my old external HD, I get "This device can run faster" message informing me it's not 2.0. All my ports are 2.0, always have been. I tested, to see if the message was junk, and when a 100mb transfer took a minute and a half, I knew it was 1.1. My iPhone now takes 45 minutes to sync, when it used to take 2 minutes. This is driving me crazy. I'm about to scrap it, but I thought I'd post here. On a side note, my new external 1TB works fine through USB 2.0, no 1.1 message.
What I've done so far with no success.
1. I updated all USB related drivers through the device manager - update driver. Always get: Best Driver already installed.
2. Installed all latest hp drivers from their website.
3. Installed latest chipset driver from intel.
4. Installed new USB 2.0 PCI card. (Same 1.1 notice)
5. Reinstalled Vista (Again)
6. Ran the windows hotfixes you can find in Vista Support forums.(Wouldn't install, said I don't have requirements.)
7. unplugged everything, deleted all USB root hubs, restarted, replugged in USB.
8. Could not roll back drivers, no option to do so.
9. EVERYTHING is plugged directly into mobo. No hubs. And, I've run each item through each different USB port, to see if some were bad. The good external HD works on all ports, the other devices are 1.1 on all ports.
A new symptom is that my usb keyboard and USB mouse shut down every 20 minutes or so, and restart after about 20 seconds with the sound notifications that something is unplugged in USB. Then, without me doing anything, the plugged in sound plays, and my keyboard and mouse come back online.
Any help would be very appreciated. At my wit's end.
