Dell Vostro sometimes not recognizing USB devices

I've been experiencing this problem for approximately six months on and off.

Intermitently, when I go to attach a USB device (memory stick or ipod) I get the pop up "USB Device Not Recognized."

At this point, nothing I attach will be recognized

In the Device Manager whatever I attach is listed as an Unknown Device.
I check the Properties and get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices"
I've tried right clicking and Updating the Driver Software but get the response:
"Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".
I check the Properties again and still get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices"

I've tried uninstalling the driver and restarting the PC without success.

The only thing Dell could suggest was to uninstall the Family USB Universal Host Controllers in the Device Manager and restart. This works sometimes but after a day or so the problem re occurs.

Usually I have to keep re starting until the PC finally recognizes whatever I'm trying to attach. Sometimes it starts recognizing whatever I'm attaching if i leave it for a while.

I have a Dell Vostro 200 with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit

Anyone?

Try updating your chipset and USB drivers.

Thanks,

I check for and install Windows Updates. Would this include chipset and USB drivers?

BTW, overnight the PC now recognizes my ipod. However, now any ipod or memory stick I attach cause itunes and my computer to stop responding until the ipod or memory stick is detached.

This has also happened previously

I've just restarted my PC and it's gone back to not recognizing any USB devices, ipods, memory sticks etc.
I do have an external hard drive that's still working. From experience, however, once it's disconnected it will also be unrecognized

following on from the response above, can anyone suggest the best way to update your chipset and USB drivers. Please keep it simple. I don't even know what a chipset is.

I did a search on updating these items and found adds for two products, Driver Whiz and Driver Finder. However the reviews for these products were mixed?? I don't want to make things worse.

Currently, my PC is still not recognizing any media players, memory sticks etc

Thanks.
I've downloaded R154069.exe and run it. Unfortunately no change.

I've just uninstalled al the USB Universal Host Controllers from the Device Manager and then restarted the PC. This has worked in the past but not this time.

I also tried starting up the PC with a memory stick and an ipod attached. Although the ipod displayed as connected neither were recogniozed by the PC
The only difference was in the Device Manager instead of being listed as an Unknown Device there was Device USB Mass Storage Device with a yellow triangle containing an exclamation mark. I checked the Properties which indicated "This device cannot start (code 10).

Surely someone has some idea what's causing this problem???
