HELP My Laptop is not reading Game disks?

My laptop is not reading game disks anymore. the CD ROM does open and the light does flash but every time I put a game disk it doesn't show up on the Computer folder thing. What can I do? I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 notebook PC and the disk drive I use is WDC WD2500BEVS-60UST0 ATA. According to Device manager it says "This device is working properly." I don't know what to do It used to play games perfectly a few weeks ago. :(

If the device is in device manager and NO fault are showing on its icon I use a little Isopropyl Alcohol on a cotton bud and VERY CAREFULLY clean the lens on the DVD burner. Use care when doing this and don't cry to me if you are too rough.

Technically speaking, you should be using a microfibre cloth.

Yeah use the cloth that tom says I'm a bit of an animal. Usually if it doesn't work I get a bigger hammer (I'm an engineer)

To be honest, this problem is common in Vista, and cleaning the reader is not the answer.

Also I forgot to add: When I put a disk in, it sounds as though it tries to read the disc for about 10 seconds and then stops. And whenever I click the game logo it says please insert the correct disk or something like that. its so frustrating.

This did work for me when my computer didn't read discs but may not work for every case, but it costs nothing to try if you are careful.

yep I cleaned it and it didn't work. I think I might need a new DVD/CD ROM :(

Just so you know, a DVD/CD ROM is the actual disc, not the reader/writer that you put the disc into. If you are thinking of buying new hardware, then you will have to make sure that it is compatible with your system.

Follow this even though you will think you do not have all of the symptoms.

Hello Bandie12,
If niemiro's suggestion does not work, try checking your system files.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, if errors are found, you will have to run it again, until clean.

You could also try re-installing the drivers for the CD/DVD drive.
Go to Device Manager and un-install the drivers for the CD/DVD ROM Drives, reboot and new drivers will be installed.

I got a new drive and it worked for like 2 days but now I am having the same problem. I heard this problem is common with vista but I don't know how to fix it.

have you tried using a bootable disk eg memtest or a linux o/s to double check it isnt a board or cabling fault?
