DVD RW Drive Isn't Reading Discs

Hello, recently I tried putting a CD into my Dell Studio 1537 just to play but it keeps making a sound like it's trying to run the disk but then gives out all of a sudden. When I tried to manually start it from the E: drive it just say "Please insert a a disc into drive E:." and ejects the disk. It also does the same thing for DVDs. I've tried to update the drive, which is named
TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-T633A ATA Device but it says it is up to date and working properly. Help would be appreciated.
Also, I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, if that helps at all.

Thanks.

if its doing a clunk-scrape sort of noise its probably a faulty actuator or dirty/faulty optical pickup. if thr pickup can be gotten to you can clean it a lens cleaner solution and a lintfree swab. rarely but sometimes you can restore the drive with a firmware update (not drivers) if its the actuator and its associated firmware playing up.
if its just reving up n down the pickup may dirty or faulty but it could be caused by rogue anti copying or drm software such as what sony has installed to some of it dvds/cds a year back, have you installed anything new lately?

I tried the second one first as it is most correct and it says that the issue is that the
Media in CD/DVD drive is not readable. Of course this isn't true since I was able to play the same CD yesterday.

Should I still try the other two?

This happened to me right before i had to reinstall my Vista 64-bit home premium so i could play mass effect 2 once it released.

Something corrupted either a service or dll for the Windows bootable media function. Still, searching for 3 days on google and various forums, it either came down to Reinstalling the firmware in my Optical drive, or reinstalling the entire OS (which i did).

But now you referred to Steam as a possible cause and that could be too because i use steam frequently and something that takes control of your CD drive for its system config utility or a game that is on a CD to download from their servers (i.e. TF2) could have caused my problem as well.

Look into what you have recently installed and see if anything couldve have changed or corrupted your ability to read a CD. thats all i can tell you.

It's possible but the only thing I use Steam for is Portal (download) since it was free due to Portal 2 coming out soon.

Well here, how long ago did this start happening because if it has only been a day or so, quickly system restore your pc to see if that works too.

If you dont know how to system restore (and im not saying you dont), control panel-> search "system restore"

Could also be a windows update that couldve have messed mine and yours up as well, but i dont get many things relating to "cd drives or removable media" from windows update. so if all else fails, then you may have to do what i did and reinstall your OS.
But try (if you can a different CD drive) and try to search the web for a registry fix thats known to possibly cause it to stop working.
