Ralink RT3090

I have a Compaq CQ62-220US laptop. It used to have windows 7 home premium on it and now I installed Vista Ultimate x64 because I want some of the ultimate features. The Ralink RT3090 wireless card does not work at all and there seem to be no drivers that work either I have downloaded and installed the wifi drivers from both the HP and the Ralink sites.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to go?

The card works fine with both Fedora 13 and Windows 7.

Yes, I thought it should work too and the HP site says the driver is supposed to work with XP/Vista/7 but it simply does not and trying to reinstall the driver through the Device Manager menus (allowing it to search online for the drivers) always ends in a message that windows could not locate the driver.

Did you try the second row
Ralink corp.

You should go to the ralink site.

That link should work and what a nice Christmas gift if it does.

Well I went to the Ralink site and downloaded the driver as specified in the post above but the device still fails to function with Vista Ultimate. It works fine in Fedora 13 on the exact same machine. It still shows the yellow triangle over the "network adapter" in device manager under Vista Ultimate. When you click on the device it says there is no driver for it. This is true even though the ralink driver claims to have installed successfully through the install shield dialog.

This is not the best way to get driver, but have windows get it for you.
Do you know how to do that from the device manager?

Yes, I have tried updating and/or installing the driver through the device manager many times. After your most recent suggestion I have gone to the device manager and attempted to install/update/reinstall the driver again. It terminates with the same message every time:

Windows could not find driver software for your device

If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section...

I must say one thing, every place and forum that I google you come up.

I am on the Fedora Forum and also on the Linux Mint Forum, both very actively.

I also have used the Windows 7 Forum.

The only reason I posted on this forum was that I was hoping someone could help with this driver issue.

There is nothing I can find through google about how to get this driver to work in Vista Ultimate.

Unfortunately, I do not know any tricks to get it to work. We have tried all the traditional methods; compatiblity mode, device manger and going to the website, yet it fails to work.
Lets try this, safe mode with networking. Could be a problem with the OS that stops it from installing properly.

I rebooted into safe mode and it still does not work. It does not detect the device and the Network Controller entry in device manager says that there is no driver. Attaching the ethernet cable and attempting to download the driver terminates in the same message: windows could not find a driver for the device.

My Computer

You did the right thing by trying to get as much help as possible.

This is a unique problem. I know that you understand how to install, you have done it. I know that we are using the correct driver, I picked it myself and yet it does not work.

When you are done, and you go to device manager, is it installed properly?

Just had an idea. We are thinking in terms that there is a problem with Vista; maybe its the driver. Try to use the Windows 7 driver. Start with a system restore point.

No, it is not installed at all according to device manager. This persists even when I use the Windows 7 driver from the HP site for the Compaq CQ62-220US. The device works with both windows 7 and Fedora 13. None of the drivers from the HP site or the Ralink site work even though they all install correctly according to install shield. In device manager, the network controller is always shown as not functioning and no driver installed.

I have a tenda wifi usb device and it too uses the Ralink chipset and Vista detects it and the drivers install perfectly fine. It installs the Ralink USB drivers.

So, I believe it is the drivers provided from the manufacturer. They do not work with vista.

Try the 7 driver in the regular way

and try this
save to desktop (not run,save)
Install from desktop

Well, the mystery is solved. I had already tried sp49134.exe which is the driver on the HP site for the Ralink b/g/n but it did not work. I don't know how I got it in my head that my wifi card was the Ralink model listed on the HP website. So, I tried the Atheros sriver sp8755.exe on the HP website and it actually works. The device is not the Ralink but rather the Atheros.

OK, all that matters is that it is fixed and now you can have a wonderful Christmas. In addition we got to meet. Take care and have a great day Tomorrow.
