HP HDX 18 LAPTOP reporting errors

Hi Forum, The following is appearing in Device Manager.. two yellow triangles against
WAN miniport (PPPOE0) and WAN Miniport (PPTP). I tried two things .....(1) updating the Driver. resulting in this "Windows found a driver for same but encountered an error
attempting to install it). The same for both Ports. I tried uninstalling it but neither would budge. Also could not locate drivers on the Microsoft site.
Doing a System Health Check revealed several notifications along these lines ....
"device driver marked as corrupt. configuration prevents it from working.. error 39 "
It has been recommended that I do a Factory re-instal to bring the unit back to factory settings. However, this was only done 6 weeks ago when a new Hard Drive was inserted in same. I dislike having to go through all that loading process again in such a short time.
Another matter, is that I have lost the Fingerprint Identification ability on the Laptop (Digital Digita Personal ..3) I cannot seem to be able to reload it back from it's site. The site wants a payment in any event and this facility came included with my Laptop when I purchased it.
Is there any suggestions out there about these myriad problems. This Vista is such a troublesome beast..a beauty when it works, a nightmare when otherwise. Help :sarc: By the way I am not able to do a system restore because my points do not stretch back far enough.

Hello Richard,
I am afraid I still have problems.
I tried your first recommendation (had tried this before) and it failed.
Then went to your second..SFC Command...Tried A (Scan now) and this yielded a notification that
there were corrupt files that it could NOT fix. I did not go any further.

It is looking very likely that I may have to re-install the system again from the Recovery Partition. What can you suggest ?

Hello Richard,
Thanks. Some matters seem to have rectified themselves...the yellow triangles and the WAN Mini-port items have disappeared from Device Manager completely and Corrupt Drive notifications no longer appear in the System Health Report. However, one critical warning remains.."A service is reported as having an unexpected error code. Service failed..exited with a code not = 0 or 1077" It does not say which service and I am unsure how to handle the matter. It requests a re-start of the service.
I ran scan-now three times and it still reveals that there are corrupted files. I endeavoured to bring up the log by the suggested cmd entry and it does not bring up anything. As you can appreciate I am completely lost in the matter - though the Laptop is working fine - and seem to be left with only two alternatives - calling in a technician or doing a complete re-install to Factory settings again. I often wonder is it now time to change over to Windows 7 and sample all the reported benefits of this system in regard to quick and error-free computing. Thanks for your help.

My advice, use the machine and enjoy it and the New Year.
If you do have a serious problem, it will show itself and then we can fix it.

Hi Richard,
How right you are. I am going to stem this obsessive "fixitis" and just enjoy the machine which is performing excellently in every way. Once there is no Blue Screen of Death or clunking noises within the cabinet I should be grateful. Happy New Year to you too and thanks for your excellent sane advice ,as always.
Peter.
