Gateway MD78 Display Intel Express driver problem

I have a Gateway MD78 series laptop with Vista x64 Home Premium SP2 and Display Adapter: Intel(4) Series Express Chipset. The driver is version 9.0.0.1009_Vistax86x86.

It all started with a horizontally stretched display and a yellow flag on the display adapter device table. After many hours of fooling around I was able to download a new driver from Gateway that solved the problem but found that whenever I rebooted the notebook, Vista tried to re-install the driver that failed. Originally I worked around by de-selecting the auto updates.

Now, I am unable to re-install the driver or fix the problem. The error message shows "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39). Sometimes when I try and re-install the driver it gives me a message that I already have the latest version, even though I had previously uninstalled it. Worse, it now shows a yellow flag for other devices including: Video Controller, Ethernet Controller and Mass Storage Controller.

I have run Spybot and eliminated several problems (8).

Any help or tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome
Stop wasting time with the Windows Update, that is Never the way to update drivers. Although it is th easiest.
Update does not give you the best driver, but rather a generic, one size fits all

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I was able to locate and download the current driver from Gateway but can't seem to complete the installation. Worse, when I last deleted the old driver from the Device Manager I've lost all reference to the Intel(R) Express Chipset device.

The other devices with problems are less of a concern at this point.

Put things back the way they were with System Restore.

Phew, why didn't I think of that; thanks again.

The system has now been restored and I see the Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family driver with a yellow flag (two of them actually). The other devices (Ethernet, High Def Audio & Mass Storage) still have a yellow flag. The other Video Adapter (VGA I think) has been cleared & removed.

Next steps sure would be appreciated (as you can see I'm a techno boob too).

Now try to get the driver the way that I suggested, but this time save to desktop

All yellow flags must be updated, too.

OK, I re-downloaded the Intel Expresset Drivers to the desktop (they looked the same as the ones I put into the download file). I extracted the files and then ran setup. I got the standard Intel install screens but no effect on the system. Perhaps I should have been un-installing the previous version first?

As no joy there, I figured I'd try one of the other yellow flags and I picked mass storage device. I followed the same procedure there and and it took longer; but got the same result - a device still with a yellow flag saying the driver is corrupt.

Still frustrated.

Some progress...

In the absense of any other ideas, I decided to restore the system to an even earlier date (mid January). The result is that I've now cleared the Mass Storage device flag (yipee) but am left with the Display Adapter flag on the Intel Express Chipset (2 entries).

The High Def audio device is also still flagged but it doesn'r seem to bother system performance.

Naturally, Vista and Java are now prompting me to download new updates which I'm reluctant to do given my glitches.

Again, I would welcome any tips. I'm wondering if any of the after-market driver download services ($$) would be of value?

Try uninstalling first, but for now stay away from essential drivers, such as graphics, etc. We dont want potnetially bigger problems than we have

Try installing the drivers in safe mode.

Could be a conflict due to the file running.
