Missing driver

Help help help!

I am a near Luddite when it comes to computers and my teenager has managed to pretty much "kill" her laptop and I am trying to fix it as I don't have the money to take it to a repair shop.

I get the following message when I switch it on..


\windows\system32\missing32.dl is corrupt/missing

it also advises me to put the Windows Vista disk in and re-install Vista.

However, the teenager has also managed to lose the Vista disk so I really don't know what to do.


Any help at all appreciated.

I had the idea (probably pointless) that I could search the internet and find a solution fairly quickly and download the solution onto a memory stick and put that into the laptop, guessing that is not something I can do?

There is no such file as missing32.dl (assuming that is the correct spelling) in that directory in Vista.

If you dont mind wiping it and reseting it to new then you should be able to do that by tapping the F4 key as soon as you start the laptop up and following the instructions on screen.

If it results in a non-complaining teenager I will quite happily do anything! :D

When I start it up it gives me the option to start it in safe mode, safe node with networking, safe mode with command promt, start windonws normally or last known good config (advanced). Which do I choose?

Tried it in normal mode, pressed the F4 and got a box headed winlogon.exe followed by the message the file or directory c:\windows\fonts\upcil.ttf is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

You need to tap the F4 key before you get to that point, as soon as you power the laptop on (I think it should show a samsung screen) just keep tapping the key until it give you so restore option.

I click ok on that box and get another box headed logonui.exe corrupt file saying the file or directory c:\windows\system32\msimg32.dll is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility. Again I click ok and get a further box headed logonui.exe unable to locate component saying this application has failed to start because msimg32.dll was not found. re-installing the application may fix this problem. A further click of ok results in blank screen

Fantastic, thank you. I shall give this a go now. Fingers crossed you have just saved me a huge headache (and repair bill!) I will get back to you shortly as to whether this has been a success

Pressed F4, tells me windows is loading files, comes up with a black screen saying samsung and now has asked me if I want a complete or basic restore. I'm guessing complete?

You could try a basic first as you MAY save some of the stuff they had on it, I would go with the complete though for best results (full wipe and reinstall).

basic restore says it will restore major windows files only without touching user data within 3 minutes but complete restore will delete all off c drives data. As I don't know what the teenager did to cause the problem in the first place, should I go for a complete restore to ensure everything is wiped and therefore (hopefully) fix the problem?

Complete would be best and that would set it back to factory fresh like the day it was bought.

the only thing the teenager uses the laptop now for is the internet to go on facebook etc., so any files created are not an issue. I have just tried a full restore and it asks me to select a restore point but gives no options so I went back and tried a partial restore and it has just told me that window partition or drive not found. What do I do now?

It looks like they have killed the recovery partition :cry:

Ok then lets forget that idea and see if we can get it booted into safe mode.

Let the laptop boot past the samsung screen then tap F8 and see if we can get the safemode menu up.
