How to reinstall drivers from recovery CD?

I have a Vista X32 Home premium OS running on my Toshiba laptop. I have a Canon SD1200 digital camera and all I had to do was connect it using USB to the laptop and it would work fine. It never came with a driver CD.

Recently, it stopped working. Every time I try to connect to the laptop, it would say its installing the driver, and then a pop up saying driver could not be installed. In the Device manager, it says "The device could not start, Code:10". Recently, the scan function of my printer (Canon MX860) also stopped working, but I can still print to it.

I searched for the Canon digital camera driver on canon website and it says a driver is not required with Vista. I cannot find a driver anywhere on the net. I spent an hour with Canon Customer service who agreed that the Image driver for canon was corrupted on my system. That is why both my Camera and the Scan function on my printer was not working. They also said that the driver came bundled with the OS and is not available for individual download!

I have the Toshiba Recovery CD's with me and I was wondering if there is any was to reinstall the Canon drivers from the recovery CD to my system, without wiping the whole system clean? I dont want to do a clean install of the OS just to fix a driver issue. Also, I don't have all the CD's for the programs installed on my system. The Toshiba Customer service were just plain clueless!

I had problems with the Shadow copy on my laptop which has since been fixed. But that means, I don't have any restore points before this problem started.

Please, any help would be appreciated. I have spent close to 2 weeks on this issue with no resolution!

Welcome npadinjath to Vista Forums.
Why not try uninstalling the driver that is on your computer/rebooting/and get driver from Canon and do an install?
Think I went to Add and Remove printer driver first and unplug USB Connection.
I have Canon MP830 all in one printer and when I purchased desktop with Vista 32bit OEM I removed all drivers and downloaded driver for the all in one.
Even had to do it when I upgraded to Win 7 64 bit OS.
Post back if you have any luck or need more help!

I already uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers that I had the CD for. I can print to the printer, but the scan function still doesn't work. According to Canon support, the printer also use the same image driver used by the Camera for the Scan function. This is a driver that comes bundled with the OS and there is no separate download for this. That is why I want to try and reinstall the driver from the recovery CD, if possible.

Hi Richc46,

I already reinstalled the printer driver but no luck.

I don't have a restore point before when the problems began, due to some issues with shadow copying and the OS couldnt create one.

Im suggeting to remove the entire printer
Add or remove a printer
Then start from scratch, install the way you did initially.

Tried removing the entire printer and reinstalling all the drivers. Still no luck.

Any way of updating the Canon drivers from a recovery disc?

You can put the recovery disc into the drive.
This must be your driver disc the computer
company gave you.
When it comes out click it closed. Leave the disc in the drive.
Go to device manger find your printer click update driver point it to
your cd drive. If it finds it ok you are good to go.

Thanks for the suggestion Jimmy. I have tried that already. I went into the device manager and tried to update the driver by pointing it to the Recovery CD in the drive. But I get a pop up message saying that the Current version of the driver is already installed in the system.
I guess, Vista compares the version of the driver in the recovery CD with the version in the system and thinks they are the same. However, the version in the system is corrupted. Is there any way to manually delete the Canon image driver from the system? If I could do that, then next time when I connect my Camera, Vista will say that it could not locate the driver. When that happens, I can point it to my Recovery CD and all will be good (I am Hoping!!!!)

Again, how do you manually delete Digital camera imaging driver from the system?

I typed Canon in the lower left search box and it showed one of the files was Canon Printer.
I will look deeper and see if I can find more!
