Disappearing CD/DVD Drive

I'm having problems with my CD/DVD drive. It's disappeared from My Computer. It sometime comes back after repeated restarts but disappears again after a while. It's also not showing up in the Device Manager. I already tried Microsoft's Fixit. I also edited the registry by deleting upperfilter and lowerfilter. None of those solutions work. I tried to re-install the drivers but I can't do that because the CD/DVD drive is not showing up on the Device Manager. The drive is a Slimtype DVD A DS8A1H ATA Device. Can anyone help me?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Do you have the full version of your OS or do you have a set of recovery disks.

He means do you have an actual Vista installation disc, or do you just have some repair discs that came with a computer that already had Vista installed?

Hello what all did you do to the regisrty and are you expert enough to know what you are doing, did you make a copy of the regisrty before messing around with it.

Look at you restore points and tell us how far back could you go if need be.

I would also ask that you run a full updated virus scan using you anti-virus.

Also please download and run a full scan using malwarebytes here is there link and plase use the free version. Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

Do you have or use CCleaner if not it might be a good idea for you to download it and use it every couple of months. Please update us with your results on virus and malware..I am sorry I forgot to give you the link. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

To answer your previous question, I have a laptop computer that was already installed with Vista. I have no recovery discs except ones that I burned some time ago.

I have no restore points. I thought I created some but I couldn't find them.

I ran a full system scan with my Norton 360. It came back with some tracking cookies but that's it.

Malewarebytes came back with nothing.

Hi you can try the following steps:

1) Try to check if the drive is detected in Device manager

2) Try to boot from the recovery media and check if you are able to boot or not

3) Go to F8 and hit enter on Disable Drive Signature Enforcement

4) Download and run the following registry patch:
