    consumer ir devices...code 31

The other day my PC had a meltdown and now I can only use it in Safe Mode.

I have tried a restore from backup to no avail, I have tried start-up repair (no good), I have even tried to restore it back to the factory settings and that did nothing.
When it happened the screen froze and there were lines on the screen like in the old days when the old TV hit the fritz.
I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and it says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" I tried updating the driver and all the rest but still no luck
Does anyone know what the next step might be?

Can you go back to good times with a system restore while using safe mode?

No dice I afraid, I tried that as the 1st option and, still the problem. Besides, when I did a restore from the backup drive it removed that option anyway.

Cheers for the prompt response tho.

When you updated the driver, was the yellow warning still visible?

Yeah....when I clicked on update drivers it said that they were updated and there was no problem...and the strange thing is that I tried it about ten minutes ago and it loaded successfully....so I thought that the problem may have corrected itself...but then when I rebooted again it was the same old problem...confusion she reigns.

See if you can download the driver from the acer site.

Hey..I done as you instructed but I am having trouble installing them.

Thay do come with a seup application but when I click on it, the installer wizard pops up for a split second, but nothing happens...is this because I'm in safe mode?

    Cheers j

    yeah....tried that...no good im afraid

...this is the instrustions that came with the drivers

    4. INSTALLING SOFTWARE COMPONENTS
To install, extract the zip file to a directory of your choice on a system with
    an on-board Winbond WPC876xL device.
You must have administrator privileges to install/update the driver.
    Installation procedure:
    1. Boot Windows or select "scan for hardware changes" in the Device Manager.
    2. The window "Found New Hardware" appears
    -> Close this window.
    3. Execute CIRPort_Installer.msi

But when I scan for hardware changes, it finds nothing, as well as when I click on cirport installer it says that it cannot be started in safe mode. (Curses)
