I have an HP dv6500 laptop running vista 32 bit. When i purchased it (used) the device manager did not recognize the DVD drive. It blinked when a disk was inserted but the disk did not play. When I installed service pack 1, the drive was recognized and was fully functional. Then I installed service pack 2, and the drive disappeared again. It seems like it might be a driver problem, but I do not know how to search for the driver, as I don't know which drive this model has.

The drive is not listed in the device manager at all. Not even with a yellow exclamation point. Hence my problem.

Downloaded speccy and it could not locate any optical drives.
I ran Driver Tool (without buying it) and it told me that the IAE ATA ATAPI controllers were out of date. Could this be the problem? I don't want to buy the program if I don't have to.

You dont have to buy anything, Go to device manager and try to update it from there.
You will get the most current. If it says that you have the most current, find out the manufacturer and go to website and upadate. I told you how to find the manufacturer in an earlier post.
Also
Put cd in computer, while on internet, boot, see if you get a driver. Make sure that your windows updater is set to install new updates.

Since you mentioned that particular driver in your earlier post I wanted to make sure it was OK and it is; its the same date as mine. YOu need the driver above for
DVD/CD ROM drives
Speccy should tell you what you need. Did you download Speccy?

Have come to the conclusion that the drive is defective. I have a dead dv6600 laptop with a perfectly good dvd rw drive. I should be able to switch them. Do you foresee any problems with that?
