Help Finding Printer Drivers

Hi,
I got myself in a heap of trouble trying to add a duplexer , Q5582A, to my Photosmart D7260 Printer.
The Error:
"'Automatic Two-Sided Printing Module Missing' Message Displays on the Computer when Duplexing"
I tried the recommended update: Download 1.0,16.12M here:
'Automatic Two-Sided Printing Module Missing' Message Displays on the Computer when Duplexing HP Photosmart D7260 Printer | HP® Support
It didn't help
HP support told me to un-install and re-install the drivers which I did.
Now, Secunia reports the drivers as down level. When I try to update HP says the update for this printer is no longer supported.
My restore to a prior restore point failed.
The Device manager does not have driver files for this device to rollback. This may be because it is network connected.
I see a HP update in my C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Software Update\hpwuSchd2.exe
It is dated Sunday, ?October ?14, ?2007, ??9:17:32 PM. Accessed Sunday, ?October ?12, ?2008, ??11:04:27 AM

One course of action for me is to ignore Secunia. The printer seems to be working as it did before I started this project.
But, it would be nice to have the drivers back to where they were.
Could I run hpwuSchd2.exe to get my drivers back to where they were before I started on this fools errand?
Or, could you help me identify the driver files and I could restore them from a backup?

Thanks
Frank C

Thanks for the reply LottieMansion
I did find the drivers at the link that you specified.
I have not reinstalled yet. I am a bit gun shy. I don't want to make things worse.
My wife has a vista laptop that is being replaced with a new computer running Win 8. When she is through with the Vista computer I will reload the printer drivers on that machine and see if the duplexer works with new drivers. Is it necessary to uninstall the drivers before reinstall?

Hello Frank,

If the existing drivers are for the same printer, then Yes! It is necessary touninstall the drivers before re-installing the new one.

Please write back for further queries.

I think the only way I can get the Duplexer working is to un-install and reinstall the drivers.
I would like to use the HP Uninstaller as shown here:
Uninstalling the Printer Software | HP® Support
The HP uninstaller is available on the Desk Top and I do have the original installation disk (Printer CD) that I could use on the Vista Laptop and the Win 8 laptop.

Before I embark on a uninstall and reinstall printer drivers task I have a few questions:
Will a restore point protect me if I totally screw up i.e. does the restore point include drivers?
Are printer drivers installed on all of machines that use this local network connected printer?
If so, I guess I would need to uninstall and reinstall on all three machines. Is that true?
Thanks

Hello Frank C,

I suggest you to check on which computer the printer isn't working and re-install the drivers on that computer. In case you want to access the printer from another computer through a network, try adding the printer to the network and check if it works.

In terms of system restore, I would suggest you to create a restore point before you start troubleshooting. If any thing goes wrong, perform a system restore to the restore point and everything would be back to normal.

I will try to reinstall the drivers on the Vista Laptop. However I am stymied as to how to remove the existing drivers.
None of the schemes outlined here:
Uninstalling the Printer Software | HP® Support
worked for me.
I found the hpzscr40.exe (Uninstaller) but it failed on the 32 bit Vista machine.
Photosmart software was not in the Control panel Programs and Features list and
the HP uninstaller was not on the Printer CD.
Is there another way to remove the drivers?
Thanks

Not doing so good
In my quest to get the duplexer working I did the following on the Vista Laptop;
Uninstalled the printer software using these .bats from the installation CD at location - util\CCC
uninstall_L1.bat
uninstall_L2.bat
uninstall_L3.bat.
Re-installed the software from the installation CD
Duplex test failed with message:
"The document has been configured to print using the Two-Sided Printing Module but the module is not installed in the device. The document will be printed one sided."

I am beginning to wonder if this refers to the hardware and not the software. The duplexer is , as far as I can tell, properly attached to the printer.

Next, I installed a later version of the software from the download center
HP Photosmart Basic Driver
Released:
2009-07-22
File name:
100_228_PS_SF_02_Driv_Net_WW_NB.exe [1/1, 48.92M]
Version: 10.0.1
Duplex test failed as before

Finally I installed the Update related to Intuit duplexing:
2009-07-09 , Version:1.0, 16.12M
Still No Joy. Any Ideas will be welcome!

Thanks for the reply Allan D,
I did have the printer settings set as prescribed in your HP reference.
Also. the other computers on the local network a Vista laptop and a Win 8 laptop have identical printer settings.

Hello Frank C,

Please try the following steps to clean uninstall and reinstall the printer driver, this will help resolve most of the printer software and communication related issues:

  1. [*=left]Ensure the Printer USB cable is unplugged from the computer.
[*=left]Remove the installed software from “Programs and features”.
[*=left]Open “Devices and Printers” from start menu.
-- Select the printer in question.
-- From the task bar at top select “Printer server properties”.
-- Select “drivers” tab, select appropriate printer and click “Remove”.
[*=left]Click “Start”, type “regedit” without quotes in Start Search, click on “regedit.exe” to open Registry Editor
    -- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments.
-- Under Environments, select appropriate OS option (in this case Windows 64).
-- Expand “Drivers” option , under driver there will be the keys Version-2 and Version-3 (one or the other of these may be absent - not a problem).
-- Delete all the sub-keys relating to the printer inside Version-2 and Version-3, but not these keys themselves.
[*=left]Open Command Prompt window (type “cmd” without quotes in start search and click on cmd.exe)
-- Type net stop spooler and hit enter (Spooler services are stopped).
-- Type net start spooler and hit enter (Spooler services are restarted).
-- Type exit and hit enter.
[*=left]Navigate toC:/Windows/System32/Spool folder and delete all entries (Some files might not get deleted, skip them).
    [*=left]Perform Step 5 again.
[*=left]Now the printer drivers are completely cleaned from the system.
[*=left]Ensure the latest drivers are downloaded and saved (Don’t install now).
[*=left]Reboot the computer (Printer USB cable still disconnected).
[*=left]After reboot, run driver install package.
[*=left]Follow the on-screen instructions. Connect the Printer USB cable when prompted; ensure printer is turned on before connecting the printer cable to the computer.
[*=left]Printer should communicate with the system now.
Please try the steps and write back with results.

Thanks for the reply, Allan D
In step six
Navigate to C:/Windows/System32/Spool folder and delete all entries (Some files might not get deleted, skip them).

Do I delete files only or folders subordinate to the Spool folder also ?

Thanks Frank C

Allan D ,

I followed all of the steps that you specified on one computer, the Vista Laptop. the results were the same as before .
"The document has been configured to print using the Two-Sided Printing Module but the module is not installed in the device. The document will be printed one sided."

Here are the noted variations

(2) In Remove the installed software from “Programs and features”.
I removed everything that started with HP, Eight programs

(4) in regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments.
-- Under Environments, select appropriate OS option Expand “Drivers” option , under driver there will be the keys Version-2 and Version-3 (one or the other of these may be absent - not a problem).

Both keys were missing

(5) In stop and start Spooler
I needed to use an elevated cmd prompt

(6) In Navigate to C:/Windows/System32/Spool folder and delete all entries (Some files might not get deleted, skip them).
I only deleted files from the spool folder I did not delete subordinate folders. This my have not been your intent. Please advise!

(9) In Ensure the latest drivers are downloaded and saved (Don’t install now).
I chose the Basic Package

I also had to enable printer sharing in Network and sharing center

Allan, I very much appreciate your efforts. I will be away from home and computer from May 6 to May 11.
I will check out any additional information that you post after May 6 when I return.
Thank You

My Computer

Hello Frank C,

I really appreciate all your efforts in troubleshooting the issue. As we are facing certain difficulties in uninstalling the drivers, I would suggest trying
Revo Uninstaller to remove the program. Uninstall the program using the Advanced Uninstall option from the software.
**Note: It is a third party website the website could have its own terms and conditions and there could not be any guarantee for the drivers; however try installing it if necessary.

The software prompts asking you to delete the Registry keys corresponding to the program. Select all and delete them. Restart the computer to remove any traces of the drivers/programs.

Once the computer restarts, install the latest drivers and check. Also check the settings for Double Sided Printing with Duplex Printers.

Success
Allan,
I was about to run Revo uninstaller when I decided to take one more look at the device.
The message:

"The document has been configured to print using the Two-Sided Printing Module but the module is not installed in the device. The document will be printed one sided."

This has constantly nagged at me. The electric contact on the device is a simple spring loaded bridge that completes a circuit on the printer. The printer contact is two conducting strips on a phenolic board. The device bridge is in the shape of a horseshoe. I had previously inspected both contacts and saw nothing wrong. Yet the message led me to believe that the printer did not "see" the device. After reinstalling the device I held the printer with one hand and tugged on the device firmly on both sides. This was not much different from what I had done before. I had previously heard the latches snap into place and I believed that I had electrical contact. I printed a short document and did not get any message. Then I printed a two page document and the duplexer worked!

Thank you so much for all of the help. I did learn a lot about un-install and re-install I also learned that the basic driver install allows one to avoid the HP nuisance messages. I will install the basic driver on the other two machines.

[SIZE=+1]Addendum
In case anyone else is struggling with the Q5582A duplexer, I think my success was also attributable to the way that I engaged the device. I started by putting the bottom edge in first and then closing the top edge . I finished with a strong tug on both ends as I mentioned previously. In other attempts to engage the device I pull it in straight in. I think the levered engagement made a difference in effecting the electric contact.
