HP Deskjet 720C printer does not work on Vista 64 - help!

Hi,

Hope somebody can help with this. I have a new Vista Premium 64, it has it's own driver for the above parallel port printer (about 10 years old!), which is installed. If you try to print the job will spool and sometimes the printer will spew out a blank page or two, but usually the printer just makes a noise to start up printing and then the power light just blinks, the job disappears from the print job window in vista - and thats ya lot! Any thoughts/ help appreciated.

Regards,

Chris

Yes, the HP website does not offer a vista 64 driver for this printer. It is integral with vista and is the one I am currently using. It does not seem to be working, hence my post. Any thoughts appreciated.

Unfortunately, HP will not work with these printers because they are labeled obsolete.

I got my Vista64 (Home Premium SP1) to print to a DJ722c this way:

1. Installed it on a XP-Pro SP2 system as a 720c (not a 722c) using a parallel port.
2. shared it.
3. connect to if from the Vista machine over the network.

I'm not sure if the Vista machine used it's built in driver, or pulled it from the XP host, but it works. I don't have a 1284 parallel port on my Vista machine, but if I did, I'd probably try extracting the XP driver files and use them to install the printer on Vista locally. Hope this helps someone....

No company is going to support a 10 year old device, that's simply not good for business. They simply can't put that kind of man-hours into supporting the few old printer models that may still be used by a few people. You won't find many folks with 10 year old printers, and even less when you talk a specific model...so no company is going to waste time writing drivers for (maybe) 20 legacy printers that may be in use. And then try to get them to do that for all the models they made 10 years ago...not a chance.

About 3 to 4 years is the norm for most hardware it seems.

Indeed - we had one of those 720s - worked great until someone fed some pages into it that were stapled together - then, buh-bye printer, as it cost more to fix it than to bu a newer model with better features.

I am also still using an HP Deskjet 722c as my printer. It is a wonderful machine, holds a ton of ink, replaces the head with each new cartridge and has never given me the slightest problem. I am also seeking to still use it with my new Vista computer. I sure am glad cars aren't like computers.
