For those considering building new boxes, there are a lot great options out there. To assist, and since I've had 0 driver problems with vista 64bit, (including my Chinese tech market-bought webcam) -- I thought I'd list my hardware and let those looking for parts consider this system or variations on it.

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P
Everything has stable, featureful Vista 64bit drivers
Intel matrix RAID, Gigabyte RAID, Azalia HD audio, Gigabit lan, Firewire
Easily overclocked FSB to 1600mhz and put the E6420 at 3.2ghz

Videocard:
Colorful ATI HD 2600xt
Runs lastest Avivo64 codecs really well. (2900 is good 3d but lacks avivo, depends on what you want, I'm a video editor).

Vista x64 Webcam:
Vimicro VC305
These chips (vc301, vc302, vc303, vc305, vc321 are used in a lot of cameras and built into a lot of notebooks. For those looking for vc301 vc303 vc305 and other vimicro vista x64 drivers go here: (due to very bad html authoring and lack of English speakers at the company, this page is very hard to find, so I'm linking it as a service, mac drivers also there)
Vimicro Products

Drawing Tablet:
Hangwang (Hanvon, www.hangwang.com.cn)
Both Chinese and English pages and support. Great tablet, full vista 64bit drivers were released FAST, very stable, good.
http://www.hanwang.com.cn/english/download/all_Vista64_driver.zip

So there, I've got my full system, every driver is 64bit, there are no problems, no reduced features; and I've got a webcam and tablet too.

Hi! I´ve registered just to thank you. :D

I couldn´t find my webcam driver anywhere and you got it.

Thanks a lot and ROCK ON VISTA 64BIT! :p

I'm really glad you were able to find it. If I couldn't read their Chinese pages, I don't think I would have found the English page. That's not really a reasonable request for most folks! Happy to help.

What model tablet do you have? I have problems with mine. The tablet works great on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit ASUS laptop but my less than month old Vista Ultimate x64 OS it doesn't work, at all. I downloaded the newest driver, installed, the OS detects it and installs it, all goes well but then I try to use it and nothing happens. Kaput.

Mine is a Hanvon Painting Master 0806. I've had it for well over a year and it's worked good but I haven't used it in a while and hooked it up to my less than month old computer. I thought it might be broken so I hooked it up to my laptop and to my surprise it worked without a hitch just as it had previously done. Any help? I downloaded the driver from your link but no luck.

how did u manage that? ihave a ga 965p ds4 and im unable to overclock my fsb not even slightly since those boards have auto reset.
i have 4x1gb of ddr2 6400 c4 xms2 ram i wonder if have 4 sticks is the reason?
but all my hardware is tested with no errors or hardware failure. but it still auto resets when the fsb is increased.
whats ur secret lol ?

I got it all working btw. Didn't see the most recent drivers which worked perfectly.

Hey All, I just registered here to I'm going to start a new thread on this but I thought I'd mention it in this thread first to see if there are any ideas. I'm running vista home premium X64 on and an AMD dual core. Everything s great> Enter the Western Digital My Book Premium II 1.5 Terabyte external drive. I find out it's not really Vista compatible after all. Vista does not enumerate an iee 1394a device (it has to announce itself). So I try to edit the registry so vista will enumerate it..nothing. I also tried deleting IFCACHE1 so Windows would rebuild it's usb driver to recognize it...nodda... any help on the horizon?

Sorry to reply late, I've been really busy, and haven't been around much in the past month.

You didn't write much about your situation in your post, so please excuse me if I insult your intelligence with these instructions, it's not my intention, I just don't know what you do/don't know.

Premise 1: to overclock a cpu with a locked multiplier we have to increase the FSB base clock. Since we don't have Extreme edition cpus, we must do this.

Premise 2: You have the option with these boards to either set your voltages manually or let the board try to find stable voltages itself. I started with the latter option and have migrated to manual setting only because I need to tweak ram speeds, and that isn't possible in the all-auto setting.

step 1: Set your PCI-express to Manual and set it to 100MHZ..
step 2: Change CPU HOST CLOCK CONTROL to "enabled".
step 3: If your board supports it, make sure your voltage settings are set to automatic (great beginner settings and what I was using to set 3.2/1600)
step 4: make sure CIA 2 (gigabyte) is turned OFF, PERFORMANCE ENCHANCE Standard.
step 5: Change your CPU HOST FREQUENCY. I set mine to 400. Pentium4 & Core use a QDR (quad-pumped bus).. This means that at 400mhz, your bus is sending 1600 million bits per second, hence the (1600mhz display). My E6420 cpu has a 8x multiplier.. meaning when under load, it will run at 8x400mhz= 3.2ghz.
step 6: watch out for your ram speed. You should change the multiplier on your ram to a speed your chips can handle. I recommend setting the multiplier to run your ram at it's SPD settings while you are working on the cpu/fsb.. this helps take it out of the equation.. Of course, you'll want to push it later. Mine is now set to 2.5 (1000).

Why you might fail:
#1 reason: you set your ram too high. Set it to it's sticker specs until everything else is stable.

#2 reason: your CPU can't take the speed. If you have a high multiplier, you can't push your fsb as high because your cpu might destabalize.. Solution to push it further is more voltage AND more cooling (watch those temps!).

#3 reaon: your board can't take that bus speed. This is chipset to chipset and since different boards have different heat-sink designs, board to board. I've got a P35 chipset with a big-ass copper heatpipe tower on it. You've got an older 965 board.. part of the P35's abilities comes from the chips being produced with smaller gate sizes. There is a way to push your board with stability but it comes at the risk of destroying your board if you aren't careful with cooling, so I'll avoid giving instructions for it. Also, I didn't have to do this.

I'm currently at 416mhz (3.3 ghz cpu 1664 mhz fsb) using stock voltages for the board.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hi there , I have a P5K deluxe and Vista refuses to see any sata drives , whether raid or not , with or without extra drivers , do you have a raid array installed on the ICH9R ? If so what drivers did you use ?

Any help would be great.

;)

In fact, I do. My main drive is a 1 terabyte Raid-0 running on the ICH9R. I'm using the drivers from Gigabyte (I can't imagine these would be board specific though, since it's just an Intel installer in the package. Here is a link to the ones I use:
GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - Driver Download

Now, I'd like to ask you more clearly. Is Vista failing to see the drives, or is the Vista installer failing to find any suitable drives to install on. I want to be clear whether your problem is in the OS or the installer.

Cheers,
Rob

I have the same processor as Rob here, and I pushed mine to 3.21GHz easy..

Currently its running at 22 degrees aircooled..

God I love winter :D

See the other thread ICH9R. I (hopefully) outlined the steps required to fix your problem. I've set my computer up with my SATA drives using the P5K-E Deluxe/Wifi and everything worked peachy (Both Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit and 64bit). Though never in RAID (which I am going to attempt tonight)

Perhaps, but I did have a huge problem getting it to see my drive correctly while installing Vista. It would see the drive, say it formated it, but would still say Vista has not found any volumes that qualify for installation... In the end, I had to open a command prompt within the installer and use diskpart to do a manual format of the entire 1tb raid drive. After that, I had no problems installing. I dealt with MS directly on the problem and they are working on a fix to the problem.

Vista saw all my drives no problem. Even the new 750gig Seagate sata drive. It must be a board issue.

But your SATA configuration was set up to IDE I presume? Vista will install happily on that.

If you set them up in RAID, then Vista has a couple of hiccups, but nothing serious :P
