Quake 4

Hi there,

I have just installed Quake 4 on Vista 64 Ultimate with the latest 1.4.2 patch. When i go into single player mode the game will just sit there with a black screen and then quit to my desktop with a little pop up on my start menu saying "the video driver has stopped responding". Last time i played this on Vista i was able to play single player no problem, but it would still do the same, but during game play. So i thought i install it again and give it another try, but it still does the same thing. Also i'm running the latest beta 169.09 drivers with a 8800gtx. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!.

Thats probably the problem so I would try to roll back your graphic card driver.

1. opening start menu

2. right click computer

3. click on manage

4. click on device manager

5. click on display adapters

6. double click on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX

7. click on the driver tab and click on roll back driver [example]

Re: Quake 4

Here is a few questions that would help me figure out the problem.

Did you overclock your gpu (graphics processing unit) or change any of the settings?

What are the in-game graphic options? (I never played Quake 4)

Do other games work? (singleplayer and multiplayer)

Is directX fully and properly installed?

Re: Quake 4

Hi again....

Did you overclock your gpu (graphics processing unit) or change any of the settings?

Nope, nothing is overclocked, everything is at stock.

What are the in-game graphic options? (I never played Quake 4)

Everything is set to max at ultra mode with 16xAA. The resolution is set to 1920x1200.

Do other games work? (singleplayer and multiplayer)

Yeah all other games work fine both multiplayer and single player, this is really the only game that i've had problems with. I can play UT2004, call of duty 4, Bioshock, painkiller, all of the half life games, call of juarez, etc....

Is directX fully and properly installed?

Yeah, i'm sure it installed fine as all other games run without any problems.

.......

hmm, not sure what else i can do, I've heard people playing it on vista 64 no problem, but i've also heard people can't play it at all and wont load .

Thanks for your help.

Re: Quake 4

There is two problem I could think of. One is that some of the files are corrupted and the other is that I believe it is a 32bit game so not all setting will work with a 64bit driver. Try reinstalling it and turn off or lower some settings.

Re: Quake 4

Hi, it runs on my Ati based PC,

There is alot of issues with Vista though,
Your problem is probably UAC and listed on page 3,
Click Quake 4
TweakGuides.com

If not, Google- Vista- Quake 4- Nvidia (then Mix)

I set it to Ulta Quality everything on and the Character looked like Doom, I dont no what setting cause it , but it was fun for a sec. until I change it back to Optimal!

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

Yeah i have permantly disabled UAC, which is very anoying anyway and useless in my opinion and also i'm permantly logged on as admin. I'll try reinstalling the game and uninstalling the drivers. If it doesn't work it isnt such a big deal only one game after all and i've never been a huge fan of quake, more of a unreal tournament fan.

To be honest i'm kinda thinking about going back to XP as i miss it. Vista 64 is nice, but the gaming perfomace is hardly the best especially SLi .

I'll let you know how i get on.
