Vista - Games Freezing up

Hey all,

I have recently purchased a new computer and for some reason every time I play any video game it locks up after about a good 20 to 30mins of play.

Here are the specs :

CPU: Q6600 2.4Ghz
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLI
RAM: 4 x OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel
Graphics Card: EVGA 8800GT 512MB
PSU : Antec Trio Power 650W
OS: Vista Home Premium 64bit

I have updated all the drivers for my graphics card, motherboard, updated windows. Do not know what the problem is. Also the CPU temp idle is about 35 to 45 C and MB is about 35 to 40 C

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the system requirments for the video games your trying to play. Any of them say they can run on 64 bit Vista? or Vista Premium?

Oops sorry forgot to mention the games ^^;.

Anyways the games I play are Call of duty 4,Battlefield 2 and Company of Heroes but I read on the net that these games can run on vista 64 bit.

I also found out that the fan speed on the 8800GT is defaulted to stay at 29% power so I made sure to get riva tuner and manually set it to 100% speed. Since at the default speed the GPU seemed to be gaining alot of heat quickly when I was playing CoD 4. Also a new thing happened, instead of freezing the computer simply restarted. Ill try and see if it simply the GPU overheating tonight.

Do you know what your CPU is at load? Are you overclocking your CPU?

The 8800GT shouldn't be overheating with the fan on 100% so I would look further at your CPU temp.

Is this a new computer build or has the same system run these games in XP maybe?

Check your cooling. Your CPU should not overheat at that speed.

If you think it may be heat related, you can open the side penal while it is running and blast it with a box fan or house fan to see if the problem reoccurring.

My rig freezes often until I added two 120mm fans.

Download new GPU bios from www.evga.com and flash your video card. It will take care of your fan issue forever.

OCZ Ram often has to run at a higher voltage then motherboard defaults when put under a load. Check the values for your ram and make adjustments if needed.

If you play a variety of games this is very likely a Ram issue. Use Prime95 or Orthos and max load your CPU/Ram and see what happens. You may also want to check your Ram for errors. Microsoft has a program to help test your ram for errors. You can get it here: Microsoft Online Crash Analysis
