Pre-SP1 Hotfixes for Gamers - Single/SLI/CPU/Memory

n9nu

Vista Pro
There are a number of hotfixes that have been released to address the Vista gaming/graphics/memory problems many have been complaining of. Some of them you all know about, but some are hidden in the MS TechNet and MSDN download areas. Below is a listing of the hotfixes that all gamers should download...both SLI and Single GPU users.
The following patches are those which I came across while digging through TechNET and the MSDN download sites. They are pertain to gaming, graphics, memory and performace. I have them on my own FTP, so you should obtain as much bandwidth as your provider allows.

All of the following patches are for 64 Bit Vista. Respond if you need the 32 bit versions.
NOTE: Not all users will need all of the above patches. Just install them to see if you do.

My personal experience in running Vista 64 has been overall very well. With respect to gaming, there are some games that run just great and there are those that suffer because they have not been optimized fully to take advantage of multiple CPU's and GPU's.

I really only play Flight Sim X and even with the extreme setup I have, I still run into problems. I guess we just have to wait until game developers optimize their code extensively to fully utililze multiple cores.

I hope the listing of fixes above helps at lease one person out there.

Please, could you post the links to the 32bit versions of those files? Or better yet, to the KB articles that describe what each does?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi

Sure thing. Below is the 32 bit versions of the hotfixes in the second list I had:
For the following fix, you will need to go here (MS Support) to request a 32 bit version of this patch.

This patch is labeled: Graphics performance can be improved in certain multiple scenarios on a Windows Vista based computer

IMPORTANT: I forgot to mention in the original post in regards to users who are running AMD CPU's with multiple cores (X2/FX/etc).

Download the AMD Dual CPU Core Optimizer utility to utilize it's extra instruction sets to take advantage of certain features in games and apps.

Download Here: AMD Dual Core Optimizer

ALSO: For Flight Simulator X w/Acceleration or SP2, I have my FTP loaded with a lot (6GB) of files for FSX (Scenery, Aircraft, Effects, Textures, Config files, Tweaks, etc.). If anyone would be interested in these files, please email me at: [email protected] or pm me here and I will provide you with a FTP login.

Also...my FSX.cfg file is linked below, so those of you with multiple cores/gpu's can see how I got maximum perfomance with my setup. I can run at 1920x1200x32 in DX10 Preview Mode at 45 FPS (City) to 90 FPS (Mountains).

Download my FSX.cfg file: Optimized FSX.CFG file for multiple CPU/GPU systems

Additional information can be found here at the MS Knowledge base for FSX: MS Flight Sim X Official Support Pages

Zomg, n9nu, how much did a rig like that cost you?? It should easily crush even Crysis or Command & Conquer. (I know this is a useless post, but the specifications of your rig are just awe-inspiring! I had to say *something*!)

My Computer

Hi

Well I usually don't talk about money, but I guess I will open my mouth as requested LOL

I added up everything and in total it came out to be around $5500.00. Now that is what an average Joe would pay retail. Since I am a reseller and have a business, I can get certain things at a discount and thus the high end system. The best deal I got was $325.00 for both AMD FX-74 CPU's. They were new OEM Procs that I bought on ebay and really lucked out with that.

I plan to scrap all the present cooling systems in there now (4 of them) and replace it with 1 system from Cool-It Systems which will handle all 4 processors (2 GPU and 2 CPU) in one unit.

Crysis rocks on this system...plain and simple. I can run that game at 1920 x 1200 with everything turned up and maintain 40 FPS during the most heated battles....especially with the service pack for Crysis.

Flight Sim X however is still choppy sometimes and this is because the game, despite being dual core compatible, is still not up to par with the technology.

Thanks for the compliments

Hi guys!
I have Vista Ultimate X64 HUN, with all update, and with SP1. Over this updates must me dowload any hotfix/update for games, or for prog's, what is not in updates?!?
Byez.

My Computer

This sticky thread was posted in January, it is now April. How up to date is it? IE: I just built my system, installed Vista 64 (with SP1 included on the disk) and every available update save one. Would all those updates posted be in SP1?

(I'm hopingn that three is a hat trick here as well and maybe we can get an answer this time lol)

There are numerous patches, fixes, security updates and other updates that are available to download. I assume most people use Automatic Updates so I will only provide the link to show them all.

NOTE: NOT ALL UPDATES AND PATCHES ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH AUTO UPDATES. ALWAYS MANUALLY BROWSE THE ABOVE LIST OCCASIONALLY TO SEE WHATS WHAT.

You can download my updated (April 15 2008) FSX.CFG File [URL="http://digital-audio-pro.us/public/fsx.cfg"]Here
- It contains some changes. Right click to "Save As".

PLEASE NOTE: I am almost done with my comprehensive guidebook for maximizing performance while running Flight Sim X / Vista / SP1 / Etc. It will be in .PDF format and contains all the tweaks known to man and then some. Stay tuned. It should be released here and elsewhere by April 25.

Hi

Most of them, if not all by now, are included with SP1 and showup in the Windows Update, however, there are always a few that are only available via direct download from MS or by requesting the patch from them. As the first post of mine shows, there was one that needed to be requested before you could get it. MS would then email you the download link. This happens when only certain users with a specific problem in turn request help through MS directly.

I just listed those few new ones in my last post just so users can see what the latest is. I noticed one was NOT included via Windows Update and this is why I check that master database of theirs every week or so.

Peace!

Tim

Tim, does the MS master database to which you refer indicate whether each new update is included in MS Auto Update or not? That is the issue several of us are trying to determine as we'd like to manually update only those fixes which are not. Thanks.

Hi n9nu!

Vista Service Pack 1 does include all these updates and hundreds more so I have modified the topic title to reflect this and end any confusion.
