Games on Vista x64 Problems

Well, to start things off on my list of headaches, I'd like to ask can games which are not supported for Vista x64 possibly mess up other games/applications? If so, must I uninstall the games for my system to run effieciently again?

The games I currently have installed are:

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Not supported for Vista)
Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath (Also not supported)
Halo 2 for Vista (Requires a Vista OS to run)
Halo: Combat Evolved PC (Not supported for Vista, but can be said to run fine in XP Compatibility, which I've done)
Shadowrun for Vista (Requires Vista OS to run)

The following applications are installed:

iTunes (works fine, downloaded Vista version)
Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 (Unsure)
Adobe Photoshop CS3 (Can't recall)
Mozilla Firefox (Unsure, doesn't seem to run too well, and I am aware [but don't know much about] of Minefield)

Other than that, I haven't got too much on here. I've just recently switched to Vista and built myself a completely new computer. I've been looking for a good gaming PC for a while now, and I've found the cheapest way is to build it yourself. I know I've done nothing to harm the parts in the construction process, I'm not that dumb. I'm just wondering why my apps are running slowly, games which require Vista to run (Halo 2) are performing extremely poorly, as well as ones which aren't supported (C&C3: Kane's Wrath) have the same problem.

Listed below are the specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo
4 gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS
DX 10
1680 x 1050 Display on 22” Widescreen Monitor

Halo 2 seems to pick and choose when it wants to and doesn’t want to work. I finally got the campaign to work earlier today, whether it was by luck, I’m not sure. After shutting down the computer to go out for 3 hours, I came back and started it up again. I tried running Halo 2, and it wouldn’t even load. I just recently got to the Menu page of the game, and the motion picture in the background was extremely choppy.

As of now, I’m stuck. I’m not sure as to what I should do, or even how I should go about the problem. I’ve spent the last 4 days tirelessly going over pointless information that would only lead me to dead ends. The Microsoft supports site is of not help whatsoever (as if I was expecting it to be), so I come to this site in hopes of help. If anyone has any kind of suggestion, or requires more information, let me know. I’d really like to get this fixed.

c &c 3 is compatable after you run the update. After your c&c3 is patched reset your system and you are away.

As far as I know games dont usally interfear with other programs.
It is not like antivirus software which is always running in the backgroung.

  • Core 2 Quad Q6600

Even if you're only running Kane's Wrath you still need to have CNC3 updated. Theres no patch for Kane's Wrath just yet and I wouldn't expect 1 for 2-3 months.

Re: Games on Vista x64 Problems

I've got the patch for C&C 3, but no patch for Kane's Wrath might explain the crash I just encountered yesterday. I turned the settings down so everything is on Medium. It seems to be running fine, and out of nowhere I get an APPCRASH. Apparently, it's a common error for Vista games, especially C&C.

Well, my card is still returnable, so I'm going to return the 8800 GS for a 9800 GTS. I know someone who bought 2 9800 GTXs and loves them (why wouldn't he?). They're a little pricy for me so I think I'm going to stick with the GTS for now.

It seems as if my Firefox problems have fixed themselves. It might have been me not allowing my computer adequate time to load all of the back round processes at start up. I've configured my computer to not running some of the processes, and I'm already starting to see a faster start up time.

Other than that APPCRASH, I haven't encountered many other problems since then. The only thing was it took about 5 minutes to load the settings box for my to change my type of clock on the Vista sidebar. Seemed odd to me, but it's fine as of now.

I'll update again when I get the new card. I might even get a Gaming Network Card as well and see how that treats me.

Re: Games on Vista x64 Problems

Well, a pretty common error occurs when you minimize the game. Most of them will have some sort of game.dat issue that'll cause it to close. You can also try creating a custom options.ini file and replacing the old 1 with that.

Re: Games on Vista x64 Problems

Ok, so, problem solved. I just bought a ge-force 9800 GTX graphics card. It works beautifully, fixed all of my gaming problems as well. Along with that, I reinstalled Spybot Search and Destroy (virus program) and disabled the Tea Timer on that (consistently watches over your programs for stuff {not really sure what it does, it just runs in the backround}). Anyway, I'm able to run all of my games on the Highest settings possible and at my 1680x1050 resolution. Thanks for everyone trying to help, I'll definitely be coming back here if anything else is wrong.

I was just looking for something to get my computer stabilized and able to do what I wanted it to. I wasn't looking to spend over $400, and the GTX was pretty much right where I wanted it to be. I'll look into the 9900 in the near future, assuming that the rumors are correct.

I should have some pictures up as well of my entire system pretty soon. Just have to upload them and I've got no clue what I did with my camera xD.
