Steam program issue

I'm sure that most of you have heard of a program called steam.

Well, I need to update it, and to do that, I need to make the folder not "read only" anymore. This works fine until it gets to the file that is causing the problem. I am an administrator, and I click the continue on both the pop up and the UAC message. (By the way, the problem is still there with UAC turned off). But it still says I need admin priveleges. I am aware that you have complete control over your computer in safe mode, and I did this in safe mode, so I know it works. But when I switched it back to a normal boot, the problem was still there.

...So I was wondering if there was a way I could have complete control, so I could make steam work again.

Did you search this forum for other steam postings? I have seen a few.

My Computer

System One

  • CPU
pair of Intel E5430 quad core 2.66 GHz Xeons
    Motherboard
    Supermicro X7DWA-N server board
    Memory
    16GB DDR667
    Graphics Card(s)
eVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB video card
    Hard Drives
    SAS RAID
I would contact Steam or the game manufacturer about it. They must have a solution. I stopped playing all steam based games because steam was always an issue with x64.

Hi OmegaGaiden,

You can enable the built-in Administrator account and see if Steam will run properly while logged on to this account instead. The built-in Administrator account has full access. This tutorial will show you how to if needed.

Hope this helps,

My youngest son used to run this proggy, they made few changes and he had the exact same problem.
Since it runs as a service, you have just to untick the "run as administrator", ticking it was the only solution to make it work before the update, that is why i asked him if steam works as a service and if he runs it as admin as both are incompatible. Do not ask me why, i just do not know :(

Good idea Sid. I hope it works for OmegaGaiden.

Failing Sid's idea,
I use a little registry hack to add a "take ownership" function to my right click, run that on the file, it might fix it.
Tried that too, but the problem is still there.

Thanks for that though.

Oh and I tried the admin account that you suggested last night, and it still didn't work.

Thank you all for your suggestions, though.

Steam runs as a service so that means do not set compatibility options and do not run as administrator...

If your getting a UAC prompt for steam that means you have done something very, very wrong.

Completely uninstall steam and reinstall it and make sure no compatibility options have been ticked under the properties menu...

after reinstalling Steam paste the following address below into your Internet Explorer address bar and paste the diagnostic output into notepad and upload it here...

NOTE: this command will run many many tests in Steam so it may take some time,
steam://support/?Issues=*

Completely uninstalling it worked =D

And here are the diagnostics you requested.

Cheers Omega, Im glad Steam is working again for you...You should save that command for future use encase you have other issues with Steam again ;) Not many people know about it or use it unfortunately but Im glad to hear its working again :geek:
