Well I am trying to play older games on Vista but I seem to be having troubles, I get 2 second freezing in all steam games and lag through out other games, The games I can run perfectly fine are, Call of Duty 4, Stalker and Crysis I was just wondering how to fix this issue and I would appreciate it.

My specs are:
Vista home premium 32bit
3 gigs of ram
GeForce 8800GS alpha dog edition

Keep in mind, that some older games when run on Vista, have to be set in the icon properties to run in WindowsXP with Service Pack 2 mode, or they plain flat out crash.

Alright, well I forgot to add something to this, I do have a Pentium D 2.8 ghz, I have heard its been causing issues considering its a dual core in one core, And its have troubles, with is it a single core or a dual core, But I have found no way to resolve this yet, and im aggravated because I like to play older games like, Counter Strike: source and half-life 2 engined games,

Hi Koss,

I have a PentD running Vista quite well, It doesnt cause problems playing CSS or HL2...

Are you running antivirus or other security software in the background?

No background programs beside, Xfire to record my gaming hours, I have gotten information from another website to run the games in XP service pack 2 would that be correct (sorry if some one posted that above me)

EDIT: That just made the problem even worse, running it in XP gives it more lag for longer and does more damage, I really need to figure this problem out,

Another thing, My computer refuses to give me full administrator rights, I have tried in CMD and it says Access denied, and so on I have turned off the User rights selection in the control panel.

Hey Koss,

Can you take some screenshots of the CPUZ memory tab and also one of GPUZ, I want to check your memory timing and Graphics card settings and temperature :geek:

Try running it on a single core instead of both. Set affinity to CPU0 only by right clicking on the process in task manager.

Right click on command prompt and choose run as administrator. This will run a administrator level command prompt.

Disable UAC and see if that helps.

Another thing is exclude the game exe from your anti-virus scan.

How do Vista ready games play? What video card and drivers do you have? Did you try disabling your anti-virus completely? Have you ran chkdsk and defrag on your computer lately?

I think I have found out the problem its something to do with my internet, so basically my internet keeps cutting in and out and starts to lose connection and gets its connection back, is there anything to resolve this?

Go into network properties for your local area connection. check show the connection in toolbar. You will see it connect and disconnect. What speed is your router? 100 MBps or 1 Gbps?

Wireless is more tricky. I don't use wireless because it is flaky for gaming. You can reduce your security down. Security and encryption slow down games. Move closer to the antenna. Remember you get lag because the signal has to send packets. I switched my home network to CAT 6 1 Gbps.

Try WLAN Optimizer. This little program disables some "feature" in Vista that periodically checks for stronger networks in your area. Every time Vista checks for a better network, it will pause and cause some lag in online games. I installed it, and I haven't had anymore problems with my wireless.
