A connection attempt failed...

Yesterday Windows Update installed Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.37.579.0) and asked that my computer was restarted.

After re-booting I tried to connect to the internet to play Lord of the Rings Online and I could not. I have a dial-up connection (only thing available still where i live) and I kept on getting the message:

Connecting... verifying user name and password
Error 1717: Unknown interface

I phoned my ISP and after creating a new connection and rebooting the comp with everything disabled in msconfig/startup I was able to connect. After that I re-enabled everything I needed again and internet still connected no problem but when I try to play LOTRO I get the message in the launcher: A connection attempt failed and it keeps on retrying to connect but it always fails.

I checked my Firewall and my lotro client is in the approved applications. I tried Turbine LOTRO support and asked them what to do and if I should do a system restore and they said it might not be a bad idea.

Any suggestions here? Is a system restore necessary? Or should I try to uninstall that latest security update? Anybody else have problems after that update?

I turned off the firewall and I still can't connect. :(

I'm going to see if I can un-install that last Windows Security update. Please let me know if you have any other suggestion.

I'm pretty sure the Windows update is the source of the problem because I could connect fine just before it installed.

Here is the description of the update... looks like I'm stuck with it. So what now? Do I need to do the System Restore?

If turning off the security update does not work try a restore point.
If all else fails reinstall the game.

Ok, I'll try a system restore *cringes*.

Re-install the game? On dial-up? You have to be kidding... It will take me a week to download all the updates!!!

My Computer

So I go home after work last night ready to do the system restore but decide to try the game one last time to see if it can connect. I have tried many times the past 2 days and no go. I also know the problem was on my end because everybody else was connecting. But WOW! The game connected!!!!

I have no idea what happened??? I'm totally confused. :( I am getting quite a bit of lag (more than usual) but that could be the fault of my ISP... We'll see.

Anyway if you were the one to remotely fix my problem Roy69, THANKS!!! :D

Seriously, thank you for your time and advice.
