Video Crashes (bik files)

Alright, I have another problem or rather I should say I have found the root of my previous problem. .bik files will randomly crash my system... This makes no sense, at first it was the witcher that did it, now overlord does it once in a while as well. It does not allways happen when u play a .bik file. I have no Idea why it is doing this. has anyone run into this yet? I could really use a hand on this one.

including my dadiag, in hopes that someone knows whats up.
I just updated to 8.8 catalyst and drivers overlord started at that point, but the witcher has been doing all throughout. I keep bashing my head in and running in circles not finding anyone with a similar problem.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

Go here, dl and run this, then post the results: VistaForums SysInfo Tool

I doubt very much your issue is related to .bik files. The number of games that contain .biks is large, at least 4,000. If Vista did have an issue with .bik files, not only would it be common knowledge, but it would have been fixed by now.

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

This is rather large and will take some time to go through. In the meantime, are you running the game as admin? Do you have the latest DirectX updates?

**edit**

Do you have your anti-virus enabled when you're gaming? I ask because Norton is pretty big and clunky, and if you haven't told it to not scan your game's folder, it may be potentially messing you up?

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

Yes running all games as admin.
Also I generally run them in Xp sp II compatibility.
Norton is turned off, and is only used for system full scans.

To my knowledge I have the latest directX, i had to download 9 from Microsoft the other day. I'm not sure about DX10 though. I'll check when I'm home again today.

-------------------------Below was added
I have downloaded Rad tools to play the .bik files. doing so has resulted in most of them playing. however some of them stall the system, the failures seem random, since i can play them in no order 50 times before it dies. or I can start up one and it kill it instantly.
I played a video with rad tools, that was playing in overlord at the time of a such a crash, and it ran no problem. this is screaming video, and or overlays to me.

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

I think we're talking about two different things here? What I'm talking about are the .bik files that are included in games; the game's intro movies, splash screens, advertising for the developers, etc etc. After I've seen them, I usually either delete all the .biks from the game's movie folder, or if the game requires them, I just rename the extension with a meaningless term, like .bik.blah.

I get the impression this isn't what you're talking about? I've never heard of a game that, in the middle of a map or level, asks or allows you to just sit there and watch a movie? Perhaps if you could clarify what exactly it is you're referring to?

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

I am talking about the .bik files, the intro's and splash screens are killing operation.

The team that developed .bik, has a player, its called rad tools, you can wacth .biks all you want with it. Thats why I downloaded it, I wanted to see if the game was having issues or if it was movie play back in general. when played externally from a game they also can cause a lock up. hence why I am stumped.

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

What happens if you rename the .biks so they never get a chance to play? If there's a problem with them, and I'm sort of stumped as to why that would be too, renaming the extension would bypassing whatever issue the .biks were causing... or at least demonstrate there were never the problem in the first place?

btw, you've got to go to the control panel/appearance and personalization/folder options/view tab and uncheck hide file extensions in order for this to work.

Re: Video Crashes (bik files)

I have already removed the .biks from my game folders, and they run fine without them. With them the games crash. that lead me to believe that the .biks were causing the said crash.

I have no Idea why that would be the case. I don't like not having the ability to watch in game cut scenes, especially with games like the witcher where the vo is done by the game.

Yea its a bull**** issue but I paid for a product and I'd like to know how the damn game ends and watch the action unfold for myself.

Just going to chalk this up to ghosts in vista and be done with it....
