Call of Duty 4 Problems

Hey guys and gals!

I've searched to no avail...

Recently upgraded to a new machine.

Intel Core2 Quad Q9400

500GB HDD
4GB Ram
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
Vista Home Premium x64 SP1

Single player is perfect. but when I attempt to play on-line, I'm getting constant lag issues. It lags for a .5 secs every 5-10 secs of play. It's not my ISP or my network because I've tried it on my old system on the same home network (Pent IV 3.0 ghz) with no issues.

Any thoughts?

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

Thanks for the response!

I doubt it's any of those since it works perfectly well in single player mode (btw, I've had the game for a while and beat the game through expert levels).

I guess virus protection could be interfering since it may be reading the constant thru-put and bogging down. I'll see if I can exclude COD4 from real-time virus scanning. But I'm not hopeful.

I did make some progress last night. I set the game mode to "run as an administrator" and it seemed to help a great deal. I'm still not running it in compatability mode because I really want to run this is 64 bit.

Can someone explain how "run as an administrator" works in VIsta? I'm curious as to why it helped.

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

Hi Baby Huey....

do you use a router to connect ?? these have been known to cause all sorts of online gameplay issues.

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

I've tried it with both the router connected and disconnected. I'm utilizing a Linksys WRT310N router that I'm plugged directly into. I did a firmware update on the router and things improved, but the issue is still there even when I bypassed the router and connect directly to the cable modem. From there I tested my cable modem. My speed tests reflect upwards of 10MB download and 1.5MB upload, which should be more than satisfactory.

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

Sorry, I posted incorrectly. I understand how to set a program up to run as an administrator. What I'd like to understand is what changes in Vista when you do that? Does it prioritize memory, reduce security settings, or what??

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

What virus program are you running? Have you tried turning it off? Do you have a firewall running?

So the game runs fine on the same network on a different computer?

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

The Linksys WRT310N could be a problem if you're connecting using wireless.

Another problem could be PunkBuster trying to update? There was a huge update to PunkBuster recently and it's best to just run the pbsetup tool for any and all games that use PunkBuster. PunkBuster Online Countermeasures

It could also be that one or both of the new PunkBuster services, PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB, are not being allowed through your firewall? After you update, make sure these programs are both allowed.

As mentioned earlier (and I think you've already done this?) you should either disable or exclude CoD from scanning.

Lastly, it could be your settings are just too high for your card for online play? Single player is always easier on cards than multiplayer, simply because there are fewer characters to render in SP.

I'd have a look at all these options before I tried anything drastic, because there isn't anything special you need to do to run the game on Vista 64; it plays like pure sweet goodness.

Re: Call of Duty 4 Problems

Thanks gentlemen! I did all of the above and everything seems to be better. Not exactly sure which one did it, but the issue is fixed.... then I got the dreaded "iw3mp.exe has stopped working" error. It seems my Realtek onboard sound updated and the drivers kept making my game crash.

I ended up uninstalling the drivers and updating with MS ones and disabling the device. I never use onboard sound anyways, I prefer my Fal1ty USB headset. Thanks again!
