Gears of War problems

Hopefully I can find a solution here. A little background. I am running vista home premium 32bit. I have installed this game 3 times now, both with and without the user account controls. The game will run for a minute and stop working. If I am quick about the main menu, it will go to the intro movie where the "aliens" are clawing at the cage. Then the game will stop. A window will pop up and say "the program has stopped working" and then ask to look for solutions on-line. However no solution has been found. Any suggestions? Please help?

If you start the game using the Play button on the Autorun screen, you may experience the following issues:

  • Personal preferences (for example, resolution settings) are lost
  • Custom maps do not appear on the map list
To fix this problem:

  1. Go to Start, click Run, type “regedit,” and then press Enter to launch the Registry Editor
  2. Go to the following registry entry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\]
  3. Change the “SetupPath” value so that the word “binaries” is capitalized. For example: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\binaries\” becomes “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\”

I found these instructions posted by AtmosFeaR and they fixed my problem. Thanx AtmosFeaR:

Ok, here's what I did to get it to work:
Go to the folder where gears is installed and then into the binaries folder. Find the startup.exe file and then create a shortcut on your desktop or wherever. Right click and go to properties of the shortcut and click the shortcut tab and then click on the advanced button. Put a checkmark in the "Run as Administrator" box and click OK. You're done! Just start the game from the shortcut and you should be GTG.

Once again Thanks
