compatibility wizard changes nothing

I have been trying to play 1602ad on Windows Vista and it needs to be run in 256 color mode. I have run the compatiblity wizard like everyone has told me to and it doesn't change anything.....I have even gone straight to the application and told it to run in 256 mode and nothing happens....game still won't work. Is there a driver or something I can download to get my monitor to display in 256. I have and generic PnP monitor. Please help me!!
