Far Cry 2 and vista 64bit

I have a strange problem. FC2 loaded ok..activation was ok. But when I try and launch the game it does not want to start. I get the reading disc icon, then the small far cry image pops up..then just disappears.
First let me say I have a 4870x2 with latest drivers. 4 gb ram. core 2 duo clocked at 4.0gz (running stable).
I have tried using different compatibility modes, but here is the thing.... it does work intermittently... I am actually half way through the game so I know it plays (with a bit of flicker set on max settings but that is just a ati driver thing). I set to play in the lower res mode (in compatibility and then clicked the screen and it worked..I tried doing same thing next time i played and had to try about 5 or 6 times).
Now I open the file to the bin folder..click the FC2 icon.. wait for the FC2 loading image..and just click fast on screen...sometimes it works straight away..other times it just disappears and i have to click the .exe again in bin folder (sometimes i have to do this around 10 times before the game actually starts). It seems to make no difference what compatibility settings i use..or if i run as administrator. But I do keep it in XP mode.
I have not read anywhere of others with this issue..

I am starting to wish that I just stayed with xp now ..or possibly the 32 bit vista.

far cry 2 is optimised for vista, you shouldnt need to run it in compatability mode, so i dont know why you are. and 64 bit vista shouldnt be a factor as 64bit operating systems have backwards compatability for 32bit applications. this appears to be an issue with your setup, any chance you can fill in your system specs?

Hi sharkbite, welcome to the board. I play my copy full blown in settings problem free.
Is there any similar problem with other games? Did you get you game update when you install the game? Have you tried to reinstall FC2?

Hope you have it ironed out soon. Post back.

Bruce

This is the latest game I have.. only probs with other games is because they are old (like IL2 sturmovic and f22 ligthning 3). I have no probs running bioshock/fear/farcry 1 or doom3 on full settings.

I did do a complete uninstall and reinstall but not since driver updates.. (although if i did it again I would have to find and backup the savefile...already invested over 25hrs gameplay in FC2). And yes the game automatically updated itself (I also checked that it was latest version update).

I did see in whirlpool forum that somebody had a similar problem with the game on xp..there were some workarounds posted but I didnt bother as they seemed a bit dated and not specific to vista.

P.S I have updated my system specs if that is any help... Thanks for the welcome ;-)

ok ive done a bit of research on the problem, the only thing i can come up with is that the visual themes within vista are not compatable with the game, so right click your icon -> properties and disable visual themes on the compatability tab, tell us how it went.

Still does it with visual themes turned off.
Seems I have best luck getting it started using XP compatibility/ 640x480 screen resolution (when running I use 1920x1080.. the top resolution seems to cause probs in game. I also need bloom off as it causes a bright glow on screen in game).

Still takes a few goes to get running. Seems to be a random timing of clicking on vista screen during the splash logo for game.

Also I just loaded Assassins creed which is also by Ubisoft and have no problems with it. But it does run in a maximised window (cant work out how to get it into full screen).
And before you ask, I did try to run FC2 in a window but seems only place to do this on loading is the customise settings on the shorcut icon. And that didnt work either.

Thanks for trying, but seems I get these things thrown at me now and then to make me learn more about how my system works...(and possibly a punishment for something I did in a past life ).

the assassins creed one, all you have to do to get it full screen is alt+enter, but farcry2 seems to be a problem, im beginning to think ubisoft can't code games.

but after doing some research, if you want to play the game at your native resolution, try this

right click the farcry2 shortcut>properties>shortcut tab and where it says target copy and paste this on the end "+menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1080 so it looks like this > "farcry2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1080"

I've also run into a problem concerning Far Cry2 and what appears to be directx 10. Every time I enable dx10, the game begins to stutter horrifically. I'm talking about 1 to 2 fps, including the splash screens. But when dx9 is running, I have no problem maxing the game out without issue. I recently bought a geforce gtx 260 and upon installing the card Far Cry 2 actually ran dx10 without issue with the card's factory drivers. But as soon as I upgraded to the latest drivers, was when I began encountering the video stuttering. And now, if I try to switch between dx10 and 9, upon returning to 9 the game will crash at the splash screens, requiring a reinstall to work properly again. Any suggestions? I'm currently running a Q6600, geforce gtx 260, 8 gb ddr2 ram and vista 64.

hey ink, our systems are virtually identical, can you tell me what version of drivers you have? if anything the new drivers should increase performance in DX10, heres the latest drivers here

I have the latest drivers. I'm completely baffled by this problem. DX10 is completely bugged for me, to the point where it requires an uninstall to counter. I really hope this is fixed, soon.

My Computer

I am running FarCry 2 with DirectX 10, and I have never experienced any issue.

I would guess it's a driver issue.

I would start by resetting to default timing and rebooting. Then, try your game. It could be a timing issue.

To 'fix' the DX10 stutter type gfx_MaxFps 30-40 in the console. It works for ATI drivers at least.

The crashing after 1 hour is a PITA though.

I know this is a different issue, but maybe someone here has some idea what's going on..

I've installed Far Cry 2 on my system (Vista Ultimate x64) but afterwards there is no start menu folder for the game, nor does it show in my Program folder (x86 or x64). I can play the game when I use the DVD autorun and select play the game, but I'd really like to use the benchmarking tool that can only be run from the resident program on the machine...

I had installed this on my XP 32 bit install before upgrade to Vista x64 and was able to run the benchmark no problem. Also, my Vista x64 was a clean install to a new HDD - no chance that this is related to a previous install.

Probably you have your machine clocked up too much. I run FC1 on my Vista 64 and it works, except if I have it OCed too much it will beep at me because it's getting too hot.

Ding! This was the solution! Thanks a bundle! I had to disable that and my Wacom. Question, though: What happens when I was to use my Wacom with the services disabled?

My wacom service was fine enabled with FC2 and it worked fine.

After playing just start the services and they'll be active again....

Glad it works for you.
