Anyone else having this problem?

Really frustrating.

Hi Cybersquirt,

Did you install as Administrator? also what version of Vista are you running 32 or 64-Bit?

I have the game and it works fine under Vista 64-Bit

Hiya Jekyll and Hyde,

I'm running vista ultimate x64. In DK2 options, I've disabled hardware acceleration and QSound; on the shortcut, I've disabled themes, composition, and scaling, and set compatibility mode for XP sp2. the 'run as administrator' box is grayed out, probably because I'm running an admin level account?

Ok, well you've pretty much done all I could find out last night about this from others with the same problem, only other thing I can ask is have you patched to the latest version? or rather what version of the game do you have is it 1.30, if it is then go ahead with the patch below, if not, then hang on before you do

Patch

Don't give up hope though, I don't have Vista Ultimate, I have Home Premium, not sure that that would have anything to do with it though, I would'nt have thought it would so it has to be something else.

Just found this thread from here funnily enough, see if anything there helps, I hope it does and then let us know how you get on

Hopefully we'll get you sorted

Hola,

Yes, I'm running 1.7 - heard rumors of 2.0 but haven't seen any such file.

Rearranging settings and experiencing MORE ctd's (crash to desktop's)

Thanks for the encouragement. Will post what, if anything, works.

Hi again,

Your Welcome :D

I think your safe to assume 1.7 is the very latest, I have never even heard about a a patch 2.0, so I would'nt worry about that

Do you have anything running in the background at all that might be interfering with it?

A couple of little tips for you to try,

I used and still do get the odd crashes in games, and found that by

1 Switching off Windows Defender (never did any harm for me)

2. Windows aero off has also helped with crashes

Might be worth trying maybe :)

Aero is explained here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/experiences/aero.mspx

I'm assuming though that your version of Vista has it, but not having your version myself I would'nt know for sure

Is it still crashing for you?

I hope someone else might know what to try as my ideas are running out, wish I could get it working for you, as I know what a great game it is

Chin up, I'm sure it will get working for you soon

No, still not working, but thanks for trying. I'll just have to keep the 98 machine around. I couldn't getting working on my XP system either - I think it was incompatible with my AMD 64-bit processor as that was the one thing I had in common with someone else who couldn't run it.

I'll poke at it when I get tired of the thousand other games I've yet to play on this rig. If I figure it out, I'll post. Thanks again. :)

Well, now I have an error message, at least:

DKII.icd has stopped responding.

Really? :sarc:

Also tried adding the game to DEP exceptions for naught.

(shrugs) I don't think this is gonna happen on this machine.

Hi Cybersquirt,

If you still have your XP machine you could try here as the guy mentions that very same error, but it may not be of use to you, but the link is here if it is, Dungeon Keeper 2 is listed at the top left with a few other games

Phil's Thoughts | Tips, Tricks, and Support | Gaming

As for getting it going on Vista I don't know mate, wish I did, if its any consolation I too had and have problems getting some older games running on Vista and some just won't at all, a recent case in point is American Conquest Anthology, with Divided Nation etc.......

So I have to shelve them until I can be bothered to install XP again

So in some games cases and Vista you just have to swallow the fact that it just isn't going to work anymore, shame though as like I say for me DK2 works a treat, don't mean to rub it in though :(

Anyway I wish you luck in getting it to run, even if it was on XP it would be better than nothing, assuming you still have XP of course :D

I have experienced the very same problems but have found a definite solution!!!!

I installed VMC from windows (Virtual Machine 2007)

I installed Windows 98 onto a virtual machine (either download an ISO for it...or actually buy it!!)

Installed Dungeon Keeper 2!!! Works fine with no crashes and no need to bugger about!

Thank god that I can finally play this game again unhindered

My Computer

From trying to remember the name of the game I used to play of my brothers.. to installing and trying to fix it.. I really do like this game a lot but get the same 'crash to desktop' for no apparent reason while playing and seemingly having no problems.

So after reading this thread, I figured out I am running 32 bit.. but don't know if the same things may apply as those for 64 bit? also read someone was using a fan base 1.8 version but read elsewhere that ppl had problems with the 1.7 patch.

I know I'd get farther in the game (as we all know) if it would stop crashing.. but I'd get less sleep :P but that's ok.. I really do like the game :D

another question I have is: I'd like to find/DL the first DK (help me out with the exact name or DL location please?) but what would I have to do to get it to run .. this based on the probs all are having with DK2 :)

Thanks!
Julia
