Age of Empires II and Expansion

Alright, so I've basically installed everything and patched it and have the CD in the drive but when I start up the game, the game's logo shows up and then it suddenly goes.... "Age of Empires II expansion has Stopped working..." blah blah blah. I've ran some old games and they worked I don't know why AoE II doesn't....

Tried Compatibility Windows 98 and XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1 *No idea why*
Tried reinstalling both of them, patched them already, my anti-virus doesn't interfere with it or anything, tried running in 256 colours and still crashes, also ran as Administrator and it doesn't work..

Can anyone help me?

Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad 6600, 4gigs of memory, nVidia 9500 GT 256mb and Home Vista Premium x64/x86 and current Monitor settings is 1680 by 1050

Also this is my Task Manager, i don't think any of those interfere with it running the game..

Re: Age of Empires II and Expansion

After reading your post I tried to start my old installation of AoE2 (on storage-HD) and it did run perfect. The basic game (empires2.exe) as well as the expansion (age2_x1/age2_x1.exe) required only the acceptal of the EULA (license and stuff) since I didn't installed the game properly on Vista. But everything else worked fine. So it may be a problem with your version of Vista or maybe even the system.

I had some troubles recently with older games because the programs had insufficient rights to access files... try "run as administrator" on the empires2.exe (not the shortcut), but that's only a vague guess...
Good luck!

Noël

Re: Age of Empires II and Expansion

I tried what you said Dunkelseele, but it didn't work either. It just crashes for no apparent reason that I can't identify I also put a picture of my task manager, go check if you think that one of the programs that is currently running is interfering with the running of the game.

Re: Age of Empires II and Expansion

Well it does at least not look like something is interfering with AoE, but you can never be sure just by viewing... My guess is still, that there is a problem with your Vista. I'm using the 32bit-version, you are using the 64bit-version, I think that maybe a problem since I heard from some people that 64bit OS's are more likely to produce errors on 32bit applications.

BTW: Nice avatar, you did spend too much time on the planet of Jubal, didn't you? ; )

Re: Age of Empires II and Expansion

Off-Topic: Avatars are War-Puppets, I have traitor and loyalist ones o: I don't know who made them though...

On-Topic: yeah i kinda do notice that there are a lot of errors that I've currently seen in the whole span of... Half a year, random crashes and random blue screens of death... I guess it might be the system itself :|

But I'll wait, till someone finds something that will fix this

Re: Age of Empires II and Expansion

"Fault Module Name: dplayerx.dll" - That seems to be the problem. dplayerx.dll is part of SafeDisc1 disc copy protection. So there may be an issue with either the protection-type and your Vista or simply with your CD. As this may concern any others with the same problem, I'm bumping this thread.
