Xbox 360 PC USB CONTROLLER ISSUE - Disconnects Randomly

Greets,
I have the xbox 360 PC controller (USB). Upon receiving last Xmas worked fine until my last reformat. Since then every time I run a game to use the controller it plays for a round maybe 1.5 rounds per game then the controller bails, basically shuts down / disconnects. Windows says unknown usb devise detected. It takes 2x or so reconnecting the controller sometimes a reboot to start the cycle over again.

I went a bunch of pages back on this forum and followed a somewhat simular issue. downloaded drivers from the MS site as well as Win Update even used basic CD install. Same issue all the way through however the last attempt following this thread here ( http://www.vistax64.com/gaming/153000-installing-xbox-360-wired-controller.html ) activated the controller for nearly 45 mins straight then bailed as usual.

So I was looking for advice or anyone else whom might have run into this issue.

Im on:
Windows Vista x64 2 gigs ram ATI radeon XT2600HD AMD +5600 2.8.

there maybe something using up your usb power and its obviously hitting a peak, when you get the error, can you click on it and bring up the usb power options and screenshot that for me? or you can alternatively right click your computer icon and go to properties, on the left there should be an option for device manager, click that and continue the uac prompt, go to the bottom of that list and expand the usb controller and right click an empty hub and go to properties. screenshot the power tab, it should look like this:usb hub.JPG

Rather strange, your controller isnt showing any power options at all, have you tried plugging it into the 4 port hub so the power comes from external power?

You mean on the back of the box? Ill give that try and will test on my media center as well.

BTW thats what happens when it bails. it loses total power.

Ill be back < Terminator voice

Well I tested it on my media center and it does a similar thing.... controller bails however on the media center it maintains power to controller but controller stops working.

This is very frustrating and I am thoroughly disappointed in Microsoft on how they handled this issue only after a 5 month purchase in which MS closes their doors on any assistance. I basically just ate a 50.00 controller and got 3 months of use out if it!

I thank for all the help if there is any light that can be shed with this updated info Much appreciated. However I am now accepting the fact that this is a crappy product with even worse manufacture support.

On a side note to those reading it I would highly suggest going a different route then this product! Logi@$%^h **Cough Cough* were I have NEVER been treated / blown off by manufacture support EVER on ANY PRODUCT they have put out. MS needs to stand behind their product!

I hope there is a resolution.... Thanks SB

i think theres not much support for xbox 360 controllers on windows because they werent originally designed with windows in mind, and were built for xbox 360, but compatability has made it possible for it to work, it may even be a faulty controller, what you can do is try the same controller that a friend has for the xbox 360 and see if the issue still remains, if it does, you can get the wireless version of the same pad and connect it to your computer with the wireless gaming reciever for windows. Sorry i cannot help you resolve the issue :(

I thank you for all the assistance the issue does lye within the fact that MS does NOT stand behind their product as does logitch. MS controller War = 90 days Logitech = 1 yr on EVERY product they sell. I made a mistake.

TY needles you have been more then a help!

hi sb,
i would have to agree with you about logitech, i had a G15 keyboard (blue backlight) for about 15/16 months or so when half the keys stopped working, i E-mailed logitech in the hope i could get this fixed, they E-mailed me back saying they no longer made that keyboard but they would replace the keyboard with a new one (orange backlight) free of charge, now thats what i call customer service.
