The majority of games lock my computer...

Hi!
But my problem is, when I start some games, or even programs (Fallout 3, Halo 2, or HJ Split, etc...) my computer just locks up, with the blue circle vista loading thing, stops having the spin effect, I can't even move my mouse.
This causes me to do a force restart with the switch on the back of my PSU.
It isn't the service pack, because it did this on sp.1 now on 2
It's not my video drivers, as I have recently updated them.
But I am not sure if my graphics card is conflicting with my mobo, because my graphics card is from ATi, while the motherboard is a nForce-730i.
Fallout 3 used to work, even to the point where I beat it.

Its possible for programs to hiccup otherwise.

Has your pc ever had a virus on it? If it has then click the link in my sig and start at step 1. If it hasent then click the link in my sig and do steps 2,3,4 and 5.
No viruses have actually been on this computer, avast stops me from going to shady sites...

Vista does allow you to run DirectX 10 but its not got the latest version. Use the link i gave you and it will update the components to the latest build which should improve performance and reduce compatability errors.

I suggest doing all the steps i gave you but if you dont want to then at the least install the full CCC package then reboot your pc and then install these two updates then reboot your pc again and try playing a game and see if the problem still exists:

I have the most up to date ATi stuff, now I just updated the DirectX, and am installing C++.
I will let you know if the problem persists.
It didn't ask for a reboot on either of them, and instead of giving an option to install C++, it offered the repair option, I did it anyways.
Now I am going to reboot for the heck of it.

here is what i suggest make sure you have the latest directx. Make sure you install any updates. Get CCleaner which is free and have that clean your computer and if you are trying to run it off of a cd go to Welcome to Steam and buy it there then sell the cd and it should be able to run.

If it doesnt work then its not a software conflict and you've already tested your ram and hard drive in step 5 so its not them so i think you'd have to be looking at getting a new graphics card.

But hopefully it will work :)

Every game that I have tried, needs 9c or higher, Crysis works, and The Sims 3 works when it wants to.
I have never tried any games that use DX-8 or lower.
But for some reason the games will work, long enough for me to beat it, then the next time I start the game, my computer just locks up.

I can't do a complete reinstall of Vista, because my computer is prebuilt, and for some reason "Gateway" doesn't like to package windows cd's with it.
Also it's a shared computer, and I am sure my mom wouldn't approve.
She isn't an administrator on this computer, so I know she isn't doing anything mischievous.

I use CCleaner alot, because it is a program that I have pretty much grown to trust.

Ok you could contact gateway to get a cd or read the manual that came with it. To my knowledge some prebuilts OS's are factory-installed in a hidden partition on the hard disk. Your manual will possibly tell you which " f* " key to press on initial boot. Be aware this will do exactly what it says - restore Vista to EXACTLY as it was when delivered. It will re-format the C: drive, thus wiping ALL the data, and updates installed since you originally got the pc.

To save most of your data partition your hard disk drive C;/ into two then move all your photos, music videos, documents etc into the new partition (do NOT attempt to change/format the existing hidden partition as you will lose your "factory settings")

This way you just have to reinstall vista, your programmes and any updates every time you reinstall vista and not your data as well.

Or a simplar solution is if its still under guarantee send it back to them and let them deal with it.

NOTE: that sucks whats happened to your mums bank account, do they think its online fraud. If so you may have keyloggers, spyware etc on your pc so do a full scan with Avast and windows defender and see if they show up anything. Then download and install ESET antivirus and do a full scan with it just to make sure.

Your manual will possibly tell you which " f* " key to press on initial boot. Be aware this will do exactly what it says - restore Vista to EXACTLY as it was when delivered. It will re-format the C: drive, thus wiping ALL the data, and updates installed since you originally got the pc.

To save most of your data partition your hard disk drive C;/ into two then move all your photos, music videos, documents etc into the new partition (do NOT attempt to change/format the existing hidden partition as you will lose your "factory settings")

This way you just have to reinstall vista, your programmes and any updates every time you reinstall vista and not your data as well.

Or a simplar solution is if its still under guarantee send it back to them and let them deal with it.

NOTE: that sucks whats happened to your mums bank account, do they think its online fraud. If so you may have keyloggers, spyware etc on your pc so do a full scan with Avast and windows defender and see if they show up anything. Then download and install ESET antivirus and do a full scan with it just to make sure.
No, it wasn't anything involved with this computer.
Her (ex) friend gave her a check to put in her bank account, since he knew we weren't doing to well in the money area.
Turns out the check was counterfeit and he stole money out of her account.
The check even passed the bank security.
The police are looking for the guy, which turns out to be an escaped convict. Bad stuff always happens to my family. :(
