Vista - "hl2.exe has stopped working" error when launching Garry's Mod

Whenever I launch the game Garry's Mod, before the main menu loads the game crashes and a text box opens saying "hl2.exe has stopped working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have tried reinstalling the game and entering fixes other threads have suggested into the command prompt. nothing has worked so far, and I'm hoping some one can help out.

I've never had a problem running the game on my old computer running XP, but my new Vista seems to be unable to play the game.

i had this problem too, easy to fix i dont have steam open atm so im going from memory.

goto your my games panel and highlight halflife2 right click and choose properties then there is another tab in the window that pops up and a butoon that lets you reset/check the local files, do that and after 5 mins it will finnish fixing the error and should play.

i have the same problem but unfortunately i think steam has updated alot since then so i was just wondering if you could give an updated walk through or if you know of a different fix cheers rohan
