3 things i noticed that are in the above list, 1st, probably the least important is vista business, not built for gaming so not really optimised.
2nd, athlon 4200+ dual core processor < useless is the optimum word for games of any type
and 3rd, never use an FX nvidia card for gaming, let alone a very outdated one... upgrade your graphics card and you will be able to play, but to play with satisfactory framerates? you need a new processor

MrNeeds has the problem down in his post Computerjunkie, the FX5900XT is not capable of running Prototype hence the error you receive

I would put it down to the graphics card. The cpu is good enough.
Just as a matter of course though look at your windows error logs to find the specific error, there may be a work around.

    Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
    Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
    Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Thanks for the help, but for the processor, which processor do you recommend? And at that, which graphics card do you recommend? Thanks again

    Re: Prototype Error

any newer ATI or NVIDIA card will do you can good cards for around $100, or really good cards for $250+.

cpu - depends on what your board can handle, or if you want to get a new mobo and cpu.

oh and by the way prototype is a great game.
