BF 2142 Grief

Hello,
I've been experiencing some problems running bf2142 on my new HP Dv6z-1100.
I've poked around, but could not find the answer to my questions. If this has been solved, please provide a link.

Installing bf2142 and the system patch goes smoothly, its when I want to play that vista (or whatever the problem is) rears its ugly head.

I can load the game, login to my account, and proceed to the main menu. However, my game automatically quits a couple seconds after I access any of the secondary menus. Windows tells me that it had to automatically quit, and that it will notify me when a solution is available. Predictably, it has not notified me yet (nor do I suspect such a feature actually works).

I've updated my audio and graphic drivers, so I don't think that is the problem. I've run as an administrator (with the updated drivers) and still nothing.

My computer should be able to handle this game, and I don't understand why it won't. I've got the turion graphics card in it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
-LBM

Re: BF 2142 Grief

Hello LittleBlueMan,
Try updating the DirectX, i know you have DX10, but just try this, sometimes when a game tries to start it looks for the DX components, if they are not where they are supposed to be, or not what the game was expecting then you can have a problem.
Give it a go and post your results.

you're probably wondering why ive bolded out a sentence above, the reason for this is that vista is always to blame when a game wont run smoothly or theres an issue, i can tell you right now, vista is not to blame, the issue is consistent with EA's servers running slowly, even when logged out, as soon as i click on anything regarding EA's logging in sequence, i have to wait a minimum of 5 minutes before anything responds, i had the same issue under XP x32, i think you would need to go to EA's battlefield 2142 FAQ section as there are plenty of people with this very issue, and please dont point and blame

Re: BF 2142 Grief

2142 quitting to desktop is sometimes system specific , when it first came out it happened on a regular basis for thousands , i could get into game only for it to drop out on me after about 20 seconds , i gave up in the end but a patch fixed it , for others it didnt

your best bet is trawling the 2142 forums

Re: BF 2142 Grief

Ah, my favourite game, glad to see people are still playing it. If you are experiencing the quit to desktop after you start a session, it is almost certainly punkbuster. Go here and follow the procedure to acquire the latest version :

PunkBuster Online Countermeasures

Nothing you can about that other than upgrade (if that is the problem) because Punkbuster needs to be continually upgraded otherwise the server boots you (and often crashes 2142).

If the crash to desktop is occurring BEFORE you select a server, than it is most likely not punkbuster. Then it is likely a graphics issue. First thing to try is to turn off AA (anti-aliasing) and see if that fixes it. You lose some of the top end effects, but the load on your graphics card is dramatically reduced. If that works, you can try to bump it back on to 2X (instead of 4X or 8X), and see if that remains stable. Likely if it is stable with no AA, you won't be able to turn it on at any rate.

If that is not it, then set all of the video options in the game to low qual. It will look like crap, but you should be able to play the game. If that works, then you can start bumping them up until you find the culprit.

Good luck,
DD.
