Some older games simply wont run under Vista and Win7.

As for the 4 gig only showing as 3 gig, WinXP has a limit. 3.x gig is the maximum it uses due to its address space.

This is also what I have heard, although, I am sure there are always work-arounds for it but... is it worth the time and trouble?

This is what I would do and suggest...

Get Win 7 x64 (why go backwards when you can go forward? ;)) Honestly though, Win 7 is more refined and uses less resources than Vista so 4GB's will be ok.

Dual Boot with both XP w/SP3 32bit & Win 7 x64 so, whatever games that don't work on Win 7 you can always play on XP and life will be sweet as always... I am talking about older games as none of the current games I play (Shooters Games Only) gave me a single problem when played on Win 7 Ultimate x64.

There are very good "How To's" on Dual Booting. I did it so... anybody can :)

Can't say anything about either Vista or Win 7 32 bit... I know only about Vista or Win 7 Ultimate 64 because it is what I run at the house and... all my games play better on Win 7 than they do on Vista... but hey, it was just a suggestion ;)

Yes move to 7 x64 this should help with the fps and all those games will work. no lag will also depend on your cpu and graphics. if it doesnt run smoothly lower your resolution and or your graphics detail
