Help on how to run games smoothly.

Hi. [First of all, mods please move this to the appropriate forum if ever I'm wrong in putting it here thanks] I have been having windows vista for a while now, probably more than 6 months, and I didnt have this problem before. I play a certain mmorpg, which is not really graphically demanding, and it used to play smoothly up until this past few days. Now whenever I play the game, it looks like the a stop-go motion, like something else is running or the computer is having such a hard time running the game and ruins the gameplay experience. Other people call it choppy graphics, where it used to be (for example) 60fps now seems like its 20fps. I have not installed anything out of the ordinary, have loads of hard drive memory. I also checked the task manager, and it shows no other application running. Sad thing is, even if i set the mmorpg game to 800x600 resolution, first it will run smooth, then it will go choppy chop once again.. I never had this sort of problem up til now. Please help.

Hello fedalanda,
Do you play on the same servers all the time ?, and does it do this when you play an offline game ?.

If this has just started, i would do a system restore to a point before this problem started, if this fixes it, take a look at what is different on your system.
If it does not fix it, we will have to dig deeper.
Good luck and post your results.

the last restore point would be ages ago and i believe i'd lose most of the data i have as of now. is there another way of dealing with this issue?

There is a lot you can do track down reason for this.
Start by checking your file system. Link below.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

Download these two free apps, and run them.

Malwarebytes.org

CCleaner - Home Backup Registry When Prompted

Type in search "msconfig" (no quotes) press enter, accept the UAC prompt, open Startup" tab and see what is being loaded at startup, disable all but essential programs, anything disabled here can be started manually when needed.

Go to your Manufacturers site and check for sound, video, and chipset driver updates.

Also, look at your system temps, SpeedFan is a good app for this.

SpeedFan - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Give these things a try and post your results, good luck.

Hey I see that you guys have it all sort of figured out, but this happened to me a couple of months ago, my fps was 40, then dramatically dropped down to 12. Over time it went back up, I can't explain it. Hope this helps!

actually no. i see no problems. tried the registry cleaner and the malwarebytes. still slows down. i'm fearing that this might be a hardware/overheat issue?

Try making sure you dont have any AVG Virus scans running or something, they slowed my frames down as well as loading times. Also lower some effects in game, like for example on WoW if you lower Shadows and View Distance it gives better frames. If none of these work try right clicking your desktop, going to themes, and changing it to "windows classic" theme. It got me an extra 30 frames.

If none of these help you I am sorry, I dont know any other ways.
