Apparent USB device being removed and added while playing various games

I have been experiencing this problem for some time and am now getting frustrated,

Whilst playing several games, Halo 2, Burnout paradise and a few others my pc lags dredfully, to the extent that the games are unplayable,
The PC gives a sound indication as if theres a USB device being removed then added continually which is what appears to be causeing the lag but i have not found any way to stop this can anyone help.

am running vista home premium 64bit.

any changes to the pc lately? check fans and heatsinks are clear of dirt and if possible check the psu voltages under load, a small drop could be enought for the card to slow down and usb ports to drop out.
