Vista Ultimate 64bit and games

Hi All,

After years of using Nvidia cards because ATI based cards were crap; when my nvidia 8800 gtx 768mb card died on me after quite a few years of use, i opted for an ati sapphire radeon hd 5770.

problem is that although I have removed every trace of the nvidia drivers, even trawling through the registry manually to remove them and cleaning the system up totally there are certain games that will not play at all.

Far Cry 2 will not play, neither will fallout 3, nor UT3, NFS undercover, nor Bejewled 2.

question is, is it the card not being compatible with the games; or is the card faulty or do I really need to reformat the master drive and start again?

Any suggestions?

Hello kadesigns,
I have two ATI 4870x2, and the same OS and can play UT with no problems.
Fallout 3 is a pig, i can play for hours with no problems, next time i play i CTD and it locks up all the time.
Far Cry 2 plays fine.

I don't think its your card, of course it could be a duff card, but that is very rare, a format and a fresh install is a pain, but if you go that way, at least you will know for sure its not your OS.

When you say the games wont play, what exactly are the games doing, or not doing ?.

Also, i have to ask, are you using the latest drivers from ATI, or are you using the disk that came with the card ?.

Let us know what the errors are, and confirm that you have the latest ATI drivers.

Hi,

I know pc games can be a pain in the ass, i have been in I.T. for over 20 years so I know that much, but I had never come across this.

All my drivers were up to date, etc, etc. I had even ran driver sweeper and gone through the registery manually to remove all traces of nvidia, but to no avail.

The problem is now solved.

The graphics card is fine. The formatting of my C drive and the re-installation of vista 64bit with the updates is not. So far and still counting it has taken over 17 hours, but fallout 3, ut3 and far cry 2 work perfectly.

So, it is pretty much what I thought in the first place - that going from nvidia to ATI is not a simple process - bit like having AOL on your system and then wanting to change someone else. A reformat is required.

Hi,

Not quite.

Games will play perfectly if and only if msconfig is changed to selective startup and booted that way and it works perfectly - bit of a pain if you ask me.

So my question is now - is it possible to dual boot msconfig - one user account using one msconfig, the other the normal msconfig?

Dual boot is a pain in the ass.

Glad you got it sorted, good luck.

Not sure why that is a problem as msconfig will change to selective startup as soon as you disable even one item from the startup tab. Any auto update programs that are in the startup list are a good one to disable (Java, Quicktime, etc).

What do you selected on Selective Startup? I would think that you wouldnt need to do that to run it properly? That sounds kinda weird.
