Call of Duty 1 (Game of the Year Edition) Malfunctioning

Hello,

I have had COD installed on my computer for about a month now and it started out great. I was playing for hours with no lag and no problems whatsoever. But recently, I can play for about 5 or 10 minutes before the game just freezes and I actually have to restart my computer to exit the game. I don't know why this is happening. I assume it's just a compatibility thing, but why would it work great for about a month and then suddenly decide to stop? I have worked a bit of Google magic and many of the pages I discovered said that for the most part, there are no compatibility issues. I saw some posts on here about COD, but none of them really related to my issue. Oh and I don't get any kind of error message, nor does the game crash and close. It simply freezes and nothing else. I can also hear the audio in the game while it is frozen, but I can do nothing to recover except restart.

My system specs:
-Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista Home Premium 32-bit
-Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @2.5GHz
-750GB HD
-4GB RAM
-ATI Radeon 2400 PRO

Any help is much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

After installing your software did you make a restore point just in case something went wrong.

I am guessing this is quit new as far as the freeze, first look in your event viewer to look for error's when your system freezes.

Before I would start doing certain things I would ask that you do the following.

1. Run a full updated Virus scan using your internet security...
2. Run a full scan with malwarebytes here is the link and use the free version..

Malwarebytes

We want to make sure that your system is not corrupted with a virus or malware.
If your system has any of the following then doing anything else at this point would be in pointless because you would continue to have more problems, even with the best security you can still get infected. Please let us know when you have runn the scans and tell us if there were any virus's or malware.

Thanks for the quick response.

No, I did not make a restore point before installing the game. I admit this was probably not a smart move, but I digress.

I performed the scans you mentioned and my system is clean. After that, I looked in the event viewer, but I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I ran Call of Duty (which again only allowed me to play for about 10 mintues) which replicated the freezing problem. Once this happened, I checked the event viewer and the following showed up:

Hello sinse there is no restore point have you tried to do a sfc scan or have your looked at your event viewer to see what errors you have regarding this.

Do do a sfc you do the following.

1. Click Start
2. In the search bo type sfc /scannow notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash. Here is a great tutorial on the sfc.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

If the scan finds any errors then run it 3 more times as it fix's more each time you run the scan

I wonder if your DCOM server is actually corrupted then, go to the start menu and type in the search box "services.msc" and continue the prompt, now find DCOM server process launcher and see if that is set to automatic, if not, right click and start the service and set to automatic, this should solve the problem, if it's already set as automatic, then it maybe something to do with the dependencies, try enabling RPC(remote procedure call) as well, hope this helps.

have you tried to do a sfc scan or have your looked at your event viewer to see what errors you have regarding this.

Yes, I have looked at my event viewer and I showed the event details above. I ran the sfc scan and it says it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I checked the CBS log that it mentions, but it is trying to repair 2 things: something about Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar and something about Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor. I wouldn't think that these would affect the game.

I checked both the DCOM and the RPC and both services are started and set as automatic. I also noticed a service called RPC Locator. Does this have anything to do with the RPC? Should this service also be started and set as automatic?

Hope you don't mind me interjecting here guys?
On reading the thread I noticed the mention of < Windows side bar >!
On a thread I was assisting on over the past 2-3 days, with various problems, it was indicated that maybe, I say maybe, in this instance it was possibly part of the problem.
With that in mind I suggested that it be uninstalled. One thing less to worry over & possibly better than repair?
If you use it, well it can be reinstalled.
Just my observations.

I have run the sfc several times now and I still get the same result, that it has found some corrupt files but was not able to fix them. But as I mentioned earlier, I don't know that the problems it has found would affect running Call of Duty. However, I'm sure you know more about this than I, so perhaps you have more suggestions.

Kesume, I just saw your post. I don't understand how windows sidebar could affect only Call of Duty and nothing else on my computer, but maybe you could enlighten me? I admit that I could try uninstalling and reinstalling it, but I don't want to remove it as I use it frequently. It just seems to me that if the sidebar had some problem, it wouldn't just affect COD, but perhaps I am wrong. Thanks for your input.

Read you reply. As I stated "Maybe", and in that instance together with log readings, win updates, faults stated. It was a possibility that it had a contribution, % unknown, 100% reason unknown.
As you read the post, computer now appears to be ok, reasons % unknown.
I was unaware that your win sidebar affects COD only. Must have missed that in one of the other posts.
If running sfc has found corrupted files & cannot repair them, then by it's own definition you have some problems because you have corrupted files.
These files may, I say may somehow be linked to the game. % unknown @ this stage.

OK so it looks like it could be a registry error, but don't Malwarebytes and the sfc scan check for registry errors? I scanned my system with both and I haven't gotten any registry errors. Does anybody know of any good registry scanning tools (preferably ones that are free)? If so, I will try it and see if it fixes my problem.
