Battlefield 2 and add-ons

I have this problem on Vista x6 which doesnt occur on x86. I install BF2 and the extras and patch to latest version available. The game runs fine (With tghe exception of nasty Widescreen support) But after playing for a while, no more than 20 minutes, it just crashes to desktop. This crash is silent, no error messages or anything.

I did a search for this and have seen the problem referenced in other threads but not in a thread that discusses it in detail. Does anyone else have/had this issue and if so any solutions known?

Re: Battlefield 2 and add-ons

Have you looked in the event log to see if there are any errors when the crash happens.

I know BF2 isn't the most stable game in the world.
I'm still playing it on XP x86, until i upgrade my RAM. Playing last night and crashed to desktop in the middle of a round. No warning, nothing, just crashed

Re: Battlefield 2 and add-ons

What do mean by a "dodgy patch"???

BF2 hasn't had a new patch for months now, and i can't imagine that the file got corrupted on the way down. Possible i suppose but highly unlikely.

Also back to the OP question.
When you fire the game up, is it always within 20 mins that it crashes??
Have you looked in the sys log yet to see if the is an entry at time of crash??

Re: Battlefield 2 and add-ons

Actually I havent checked the logs yet. After having this problem for a while and getting fed up (Before initial post) I uninstalled it and reinstalled on another box (XP) but was hoping there was a fix for my Vx64 box because it is my main PC. I tried reinstalling it yesterday and and it loads fine until I get to the options menu. once there I lock up until i close the game with task manager. I have to look into that issue before this one

Re: Battlefield 2 and add-ons

This sounds like the issue of memory management with large RAM graphics cards in Vista. MS has patches for these, but they are not autoupdate patches.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

Full patching will be in SP1 Vista.

Also change settings for dynamic lighting to medium - You'll hardly notice but this cuts crashes hugely.

Widescreen is no problem in BF2:

change your BF2 shortcut to this target:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200 +restart 1

Make sure the spaces between each of the parts are exactly the same as above. (adding +restart 1 also removes the intro movies btw)
