Help choosing 32/64...

Hi, I know this question has been asked, but in my opinion, never fully answered, depending of where I look.

I bought a new system : gigabyte motherboard P35-DS3L, Dual Core E6750 FSB1333, 2x1Gb OCZ XTC Rev 2 4-4-4-15 PC 6400 RAM, MSI 8600GT Overclocked...

Now, I plan in "some" foreseeable future to add another 2 GB of RAM but not now, and I don't mind reformatting and start from scratch at any time...

Should I go 32 or 64 bit? All drivers are available for my stuff. Software too for the most part.

I heard 32bit runs faster than 64, and sometimes the opposite. What should I do?
Thanks in advance!

well in my experience, run both 32 and 64 bit...64 bit being on my new computer...i seriously think 64 bit is more stable..there maybe a couple more error messages until you get the hotfixes and stuff but once you got it set..64 is way better...

its a personal opinion, also from the way your planning to add 4gb ram u will need 64 bit i believe..but if u dont mind completely reformatting it shouldnt matter for now

With those harware specs you should go x64.

No question.

Vista Ultimate x64. I am running close to your specs and having no problems.

Do a clean install.

And you really will not need the other 2 gigs of ram. Test have shown virtualy no difference in performance by adding the additional memory. I run 2 gigs corsair xms ddr2 800 and a corsaire flash drive, 2gb, ready boosted.

I fly and run all my software. I ran x86 for about 6 months after Vista was released and then took the plunge on my main rig and my Acer laptop.

Never regreted it.

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
First you should decide which vista edition you want. You can compare here:

Windows Vista: Compare Editions

I got the business edition because I didn't care for the home entertainment and movie making stuff. Business has the three games, (Titan chess, mahjong and inkball) you just have to know where to go to make them show up. I use nero for dvd burning.

If you decide you want the ultimate edition, it comes with 32 and 64 bit dvds. With the other editions you have to send off $10.00 to microsoft and they will send you a 64 bit editon. Thats how I got mine. Took a couple of weeks tho.

I know the 64 bit os can use over a gig of ram easily. Don't remember if the 32 bit version is such a memory hog or not. Some games can use use up to a gig also. So keep that in mind. You can put 4 gigs in the 32 bit os and its all there just misleading on how vista reports it.

Whatever edition you decide on, I would definately go with the 64 bit version soon after. I played around with the 32 bit version of business and got the feel of it until I received the 64 bit. Never looked back. For awhile I duel booted with winXP but got to where I didn't boot to it all and repartitioned it off. I guess it was kind of a security blanket, lol. That was back in Feb and 64 bit was dicey to say the least.

Anyway, you'll enjoy it and probably hate it at times, but it grows on you pretty quick.

Hi Ck01,

Since you have 64 bit drivers available for all your stuff, then I would go for it. You might read this article about 64 bit. It may help you make a decision about this.
