Hi Bojler,

Welcome to the forum.

You can remove Documents from the normal Vista Start menu easily, but I do not think you can do this in the Classic Start menu.

Well, it was possible in XP, so i still believe, there is a way how to remove it also in Vista.

Thanks for you reply anyway!

OK Bojler,

It took me a bit, but I found out how to do it for you. This needs to be done in a Administrator account.
NOTE: Only Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise versions have the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) .

1. Open Start Menu.
2. In white line (Start Search) area, type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
3. In the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor, click on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, and then Start Menu and Taskbar. (See screenshot below)
4. In the right pane, scroll down a bit and right click on Remove Documents icon from Start Menu and click Properties.
5. Dot Enable and click OK.
6. Logoff and Logon, or Restart the computer to apply these changes.

This should do it.

Thanks for your advice, but this is not working. It works in XP but not in Vista. I wrote in my first post that i tried gpedit.msc. I enabled this one and also removed a few other things. I removed all icons inside "Documents", but i'm not able to remove Documents icon itself.

Thanks a lot for your help anyway!

Sorry Bojler,

I found the one for XP and it was slightly different than in Vista. I was showing the way in Vista. I do not know what else to try for this. It should work, but it does not work anymore for me either. Hopefully someone has figured this out and will share it.

Sorry,
Shawn

Hi bojler... i found it after some trys... it was quite easy but a bit hidden...
so here's what u do - start -> run -> type gpedit.msc -> User configuration -> Administrative templates -> Start Menu and taskbar -> "Remove Recent Items menu from Start Menu" and you are done! If u enable "Remove Documents Icon from Start Menu" , all it does is to remove the link to (My) Documents from within the Recent items menu... (It's a bit changed from Win XP). Good luck!

Note: this is for the classic start menu (Vista Ultimate)

My Computer

I understand this is for Business, Ultimate, etc., but how can I do it in Home Premium?

There is no gpedit in this version, so please help. I hate the Documents link!

Update: I downloaded MS's excel sheet with all of the group policy settings and there was nothing in there for this exact registry edit. Any help?

I figured out how to remove the submenu called "Documents" from the list in the Vista Classic Start Menu.

Manual:

  • Open regedit.
  • Browse to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer and right-click in the right side pane and create a new DWORD value.
  • Paste this into the Name box: NoRecentDocsMenu
  • Double-click on the value you just created and change the "0" to a "1".
  • When you reboot, "Documents" will be gone from your Classic Start Menu.
Automatic:

  • Merge the attached registry entry.
