First post: Preformance loss with Vista x64 vs XP

Hi guys! First of all thanx for a great forum!
I bought a new pc:
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS4
CPU: Q6600 @ 3.44ghz (cooled with Thermalright ultra cooler)
Memory: Corsair XSM2 Extreme PC 6400 C4 - 4x1gb @ 4-4-4-12
Graphiccard: Nvidia 8800GTX @ 620/2200mhz

I tried XP for a while and i think that my pc was preforming pretty well. 3Dmark06 gave me a score of 14500p

When i upgraded to Vista x64 it felt like i lost preformance and when i tested 3Dmark06 again i end up with more than 1000p less 12300p.

I have tried both unclocked and overclocked and Vista keeps giving less scores in benchmarks than XP.
Anyone got a clue why?
Thankfull for any advice.. waiting for Crysis retail game and want my system 100% as good as it can be that day ;)

Best regards Cynic
ps. sorry if my languish is a bit odd

If I recall correctly, 3DMark06 is pretty much optimized for XP. It hasn't really taken Vista (or DX10) into account. Plus, Vista does naturally take a little more RAM, which is probably part of it.

Don't forget, you're used to XP, which means that you should think of it as the fastest thing ever on your rig (as someone mentioned in another thread, if you think that's fast, try Windows 98 on your machine). Vista was made to take advantage of those additional resources.

Just some ideas. Someone else probably knows benchmarks better than me.

Hi guys and thanx!
I have optimized Vista but the preformance experience remains. I still get about 1000p less in Vista than i do in XP.

This could be the answer to why Crysis Demo runs so bad in Vista but great in XP?

When I was duel booting xp and vista x64, I always had a higher 3dmk06 with xp. Thats been a few months ago though but right now I have the highest score I've ever had and it is with vista x64.

13,162 link: Futuremark - ORB - Project Comparison

OC'ed to 3.8GHz (8 x 475 @ 266 fsb strap DDR3-1425) vice default of 3.0GHz (9 x 333 @ 333fsb strap DDR-1333). Thats with 169.04 drivers and XFX oc'ed to 648/1512/2050

Yeah, with Vista you will need newer and faster hardware than you would have needed with the same on XP. As FightingScallion stated, Vista was designed to take advantage of the additional resources.
