Installing appications in Vista 64

Hello,

Ill try not to look to dumb here, but I just installed Vista Home Prem 64 about a week ago and I have a question.

There seems to be two Program Files to install applications into, Program Files and Program Files (x86). I know the x86 refers to 32 bit OS. So why do all my applications want to default install into the x86 Program Files?

Is there a difference in installing into either one of them? Could it cause issues that anyone knows of? Should I uninstall out of my x86 and reinstalled my application into the non-x86 Program Files?

Thanks for your time and help
Mike

i am also interested in this.
daemon tools for example has an x64 version that auto-installed into the program files(x86) folder, in in task manager shows the exe as *32

if i reinstall to the 'regular' program files folder will it be true 64 bit? help vista gurus

^Even though the OS is 64-bit,not all applications are 64-bit.
Vista X64 supports both 64-bit and 32-bit applications.
So,when u install a 32-bit application it goes into the program Files(x86) folder and when u install a true 64-bit application(there are very few !) it goes into the Program Files folder.

e.g: Install the latest Agnitum Firewall,it is true 64-bit and itll go into the "Program Files" folder.
Hope this makes it clear.

Daemon Tools support x64 (the driver part), the rest of the program is 32bits.

Since it uses a driver... you wouldn't be able to use it unless tis compiled for 64bits.

Let the programs decide what's best for them. =)

Yes,MS has created two "program Files" for a reason.
As KrossX said,Deamon Tools as an application may be 32-bits but the driver that it runs on(SPTD driver) is 64-bits and w/o the 64-bit driver it wudnt run on an X64 OS.

ok so is there any problem i can expect from leaving it installed in the 'program files' (64 bit) folder? it seems to run identically as the install into 'program files (x86)'

If its running fine ,let it be there but next time let the applications install to whatever is default.

I presume you are running x64 for? Because you can, I hope. I just reinstalled V64, and nearly all my programs are x86. I would bet that's the way it will be for some time. I'm running a quad core and 6 gigs with an SLI video situation.
I'm learning a lot, but x86 was a simpler time, not so much hunting around for stuff. I'm installing programs on different partitions, and separate hard drives to keep my C: drive tight, but I've yet to notice any noticeable speed increase.

As far as I know all drivers have to be 64bit. The difference between 64bit and 32bit programs is 64bit programs can handle higher numbers in variables and address more memory. True 64bit programs will run slightly faster. They will not run twice as fast. The only real way of getting the programs to run faster is by using code optimised for multi core cpus. A faster CPU will get it to run faster as well :geek:.
