Since you are, as far as I've been able to determine, the most knowledgeable person on this board about computers, I'd like to ask you a question.

Is there a device, log or something similar on these wondrous machines that tell a user the original factory settings and that record any changes that have been made to either the hardware or software since receiving it?

I doubt that I'm the most knowledgeable, but thank you. :o ;)

The logs in the Event Viewer will tell you most of what you are wanting. You will just need to flip through the different logs.

1. Open the Control Panel (Classic View) and click on the Administrative Tools icon.
2. Click on Event Viewer.

OR

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type eventvwr and press Enter.
3. Click the Continue button for UAC prompt.
